My votes:
Celine Dion - no one is comparable to her power and range. by far she
has the most
beautiful voice of any singer.
Shawn Colvin - gentle voice - her album "A
Few Small Repairs" floored me gentleness
with a sense of assertiveness and composure.
Jewel - incredible sweet voice. Good range
will become better with more training.
Enya - beautiful harmonious voice. would
like to see her do different styles though
i would like to see her do pop or
alternative. instead of always new age.
Sarah McCachlin - good solid voice. a bit
too hard edged at times but has power
Mariah Carey - excellent hitting high notes
and very good at sustaining them. one of
the best at doing and sustaining songs in
the higher ranges.

I thought her song from last year "It's All Coming Back To Me"
was an extremely underrated tune. Much better than "Because You Love
Me".
been consistently popular for years, can sing a broad range of tunes.

Ok, so the likes of Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston
and Toni Braxton can sing really well and have beautiful voices.
But find me a song by any one of these silly gals with any kind of
substance to it, why don't you?
>Sarah McCachlin - good solid voice. a bit

"Sarah McLachlan". Yes, she has a decent voice. But it doesn't even
begin to compare to Suzanne Vega's. Especially in "Small Blue Thing",
"Luka", "Gypsy" and "Bad Wisdom". Incredible.
Here is my list:
1. Jewel
2. Shawn Colvin
3. Suzanne Vega
4. Joni Mitchell
5. Heather Nova

Good reply, Nicole! I could also add "Priere Paienne," "La memoire

Man"...
I would guess that the poster who said Celine had never recorded anything
of substance had only heard the songs released as singes. Singles are
just a reflection of what the mass market wants to buy. If you want to
judge the depth of an artist, listen to her albums!

I totally agree that Celine has the most beautiful female voice at present
and I think that "It's all coming back to me" brings out the best in her.
Another song which deeply touched me was the "Fly" in the same album.
There's something in her voice especially in that song which touched me so
intensely. I heard that she sung that when her cousin died in her
hands.Any comments on this are welcome

Whitney Houston. AND she's gorgeous, too!
While I do enjoy some of Celine's music, she has a tendency to get nasal
in the highest registers, unlike Whitney. Mariah tends to overwork her
phrasing, or I might have chosen her, too. Jewel's has body, pathos &
charm. Her phrasing is evocative, too, but her range is very limited. I
think w/time, she'll grow, however.

What about Happy Rhodes? (Of course, Sarah and Jane Siberry have already

No problem. Even though she's retired from singing, there is nobody
alive today who can match the power, range, emotion, and technical
ability of Barbara Streisand.
Karen Carpenter--highly underrated. Amazing control. Can you imagine
what her voice would have sounded like today?
Jewel--undoubtedly the prettiest girl at the bowling alley, and has a
number of cute tricks she can do with her voice, but her first album
blows. I mean, it's only got two or three good songs on it, and the
rest are simply atrocious! Worst $15 I ever spent in my life.
Whitney Houston--no depth, but otherwise excellent.
Celine Dion--almost beautiful (not that that matters), great voice,
pretty good range. Heir-apparent to Streisand.
Mariah Carey--incredible range, but her albums are over-produced. One
to watch to see how her voice matures.
Tori Amos--did someone actually say Tori Amos?!?! Don't get me
wrong--I love Tori Amos, but she does not even rate with the rest of
these women.
I'd like to throw in an honorable mention for one of my personal
favorites, also highly underrated, and who has a voice that sounds
like it's been soaked in 25-year-old Scotch: Joni Mitchell.
Others to consider (some from outside pop music): Trisha Yearwood,
Anita Baker, Laura Pausini, Basia, Gloria Estefan and Patty Loveless.
I'd also put Celine and Whitney in that group too.

I don't know about that. I thought so when I first heard her album,
but after I listened to it a few times she really started to grow on
me. I had a chance to see her live though. While I'll agree that her
voice isn't the best from a pure vocal standpoint, she's a superb
showperson. The cute tricks she does with her voice gain power
tenfold when you hear her live, and the singing isn't the whole show.
The fact that I'm a typical twenty-year-old guy and she's a pretty
young lady only a few years older than me probably has something to do
with it, too... :)

This is a difficult question and I doubt if only one person could be on the
list. I would say:
Sarah McClaghlan (Listen to "Sad clown" - it will blow you away)
Sinead O' Connor
Others I would include on an unusual but great voice category:
Delores Clairborn (Cranberries)
Skin (Skunk Anansie)
Fionna Apple
Sultry category:
Lead singer of Cowboy Junkies
Other mentions:
Mariah Carey
Milla Jovavitch (Though I've only heard "Gentlemen who fell")
Sade
Annie Lennox
Alanis Morrisette
Lead singer of Artificial Joy Club
But as I said, the list is pretty much endless.

I must say that Jewel was quite impressive on the MTV Awards, might even

You're kidding right? Fiona's voice blows Jewels squeaky little voice

Oh, please! She looks like a heroin addict, and sings like a basset

Give me a break. Pieces of You is one of the best albums to come out in

honest and straight forward. But I guss we all have our opinions. Just

Well, her voice and lyrics are great (as well as those big, soft . . .
oops, sorry--wrong thread!), but I was talking about the songs
themselves--more specifically, speaking as a musican, the
arrangements. In a word: barf. I'd rather listen to early Cat

I guess you might be right in that sense. Her songs are mostly simple
arrangements.
But Jewel is more about emotion, not neccesarilly the way a song is put
together.
On most of her songs, the guitar is just there, just so it is there....know
what I mean.
You can take away the guitar, and her voice and lyrics would probably carry
the song by themselves. In concert, most of it is just her and her
guitar...and it's one of the best shows you'll ever see...on an emotional
standpoint...

Nothin... I'm sayin 90% of the people who buy it will like it. And you
usually don't buy an album unless you are already into a couople of the
singers songs. I'm just sayin it's a great album and I liked it (my
opinion). And most anyone else that likes her 3 other singles will love
the album...

To be fair to Jewel, "simple arrangements" is perhaps the best
definition I can come up with for Billy Joel's _Storm Front_ album, but
you don't hear anyone complaining about that one! Of course, I
personally felt that SF was Billy Joel's weakest album, but I don't
think anyone can question the fact that Billy Joel is an extremely
gifted songwriter. For Jewel to be producing an album that can even be
compared with anything Billy Joel did is, I think, very much to her
credit. Simple arrangements can be beautiful if you do it right. Jewel
has certainly done so.

Not only that, Whitney Houston is halfway between Celine and a civil
defense siren.
Is that why they call some women sirens? :-)

To each his/her own, I guess. I am a musician also and I don't even
like country music, but I happen to like Jewel.
Jewel is very talented, especially for her AGE, and she's doing REAL
music compared to most musicians these days. There's too much crappy
music out there and Jewel's talent is way beyond about 80 percent of
what is available today.

My list goes like this:
1. Jewel
2. Whitney Houston
3. Toni Braxton
4. Celine Dion
5. Mariah Carey
6. Enya
7. Fiona apple
That's my list!

It's difficult to rank. Sometimes, a rich, soulful voice hits the spot; at
other times, thin and fragile works. There is no single answer -- it's
like "which is better, violin or cello?"
Limiting it to the living (in no particular order):
Sade
Anita Baker
Margo Timmins (Cowboy Junkies)
Tori Amos
Jewel
Sarah McLaughlin
Dolores O'Riordan (Cranberries)
Unfortunately, more recent music doesn't really make good use of a great
set of pipes -- Jewel's voice is quite versatile, and her songwriting
skills are impressive (which is why I read this newsgroup).
A couple of underused voices:
- Whitney Houston, who wastes a great voice on forgettable MOR fare
(if only her recordings had the passion of her mom's)
- Mariah Carey (stop trying to shatter glass)

Even though I like Madonnas and Alanis Morrisettes stuff I wouldn't say
they have the most beautiful voice. Neither would I say Toni Braxton
does as well. At times both Celine Dion and Mariah Carey can be painful
to listen to as well but I would put them in a top10/20 list. In fact I
would rather have the first postees list except chuck out Jewel and
shove Enya down lower. Also who the hell is Easy.? <grins> :)

I'd say Harriett has my vote though...her voice is sheer magic...she could make
a Motley Crue song sound pretty.

There are a lot of good singers out there but you don't like any of the
good ones. All the ones you like are either cows or sluts. Tough
rocks buddy

Sure, those poppy queens are pretty, but has anyone even *heard* June
Tabor, Lori Carson, Holly Cole, Cassandra Wilson or Patricia Barber? They
don't have pretty voices but *great* voices! June Tabor is matchless for
sheer purity and timbre, and as Elvis Costello once said about her: "If you
don't love June Tabor, you don't love music!"

w00, sheer musical snobbery.

No, because "You Were Meant For Me" sounds VERY country :-) The rest of
the
album sounds very "folky", though.

Well, I played country music exclusively for about two years, and it
doesn't sound country AT ALL to me. It is in a shuffle beat, but
there are plenty of blues and MOR rock tunes in that beat, too.

Alanis?? Give me a break.. Well, of course it is your opinion, and I respect
it. Her music it's alright(if it wasn't played on the radio for 600billion
times a day), but her voice? I will need a second thought.
