>14 Dec * <soundtrack> Beethoven's 2nd

How many record store employees will amuse themselves by stuffing a copy
or two of this in the appropriate classical bin?

>14 Dec R Steely Dan Citizen Steely Dan <4 CD box>

So obviously a simple label (or--shudder--artist) cash-in it's almost
comical. Well, if you don't own any of their stuff on CD, and you're a big
fan, you may want to take this route. On the other hand, if you're a big
fan and you don't already own any of their stuff on CD, it's also likely
there's a reason...and I can't see how this box alleviates any potential
reservations.

>14 Dec r Iron Butterfly Heavy
>14 Dec r Iron Butterfly Metamorphosis

Silly reissue of the week award.

>14 Dec r Brownsville Station Smokin' In The Boy's Room

Who might've guessed that these solid-but-slight one-shoters would
one day merit a chance to be immortalized on CD? Well, I guess Cub
Coda deserves a few bucks...

>14 Dec *r The Shirelles Baby It's You

A straight reissue from a group better served by compilations, I expect...

>21 Dec *r Meat Loaf Bad Attitude

In the wake of newfound success, the deluge of inevitable reissues begins.
This one is fair. But trust me: When Columbia gets around to reissuing
"Midnight at the Lost and Found", save your money...

> Dec *r Teardrop Explodes BBC Radio 1 Live In Concert

Polygram has already cut-out their CD reissues of the original TE albums.
Does that make it sound like there's a big US audience for this stuff?
Well, for those who care, it's nice that someone thinks so...

>11 Jan <various> It's Not The Size That Counts

What's this? The soundtrack to a Bee Gees documentary?

>11 Jan The Waltons Lik My Trakter

If Warners is clever, they'll be touring with labelmates The Bodines.

>25 Jan Tori Amos Under The Pink [KH]

A Kate Bush poseur or a true talent? Guess we'll find out soon enough...

>25 Jan The Dentists Behind The Door...

Should open for Four Out of Five Doctors.

>25 Jan * NKOTB Face The Music [KL]

How many times is Columbia going to delay this one? Why don't they just
release it, let it sink like a stone, and be done with it?

>25 Jan * Kennedy Rose Walk The Line

Wow, finally get a second release. Wonder if they're still signed to
that IRS/Sting subsidiary?

>25 Jan * Pat McGlaughlin Unglued

He issued one decent LP on Capitol in the late '80's. He recorded a second
LP for the label, which got as far as advanced cassette distribution,
and which was reported to be great. Then the label dropped him in one
of their periodic "we signed too many Gina a Go Go's so let's drop
everyone" purges, and the second album dissappeared before any official
release...Well, it's nice to see he's finally getting a second chance...

> Jan Deee-lite <title unavailable> [BG]

Which will determine whether "The Groove is in the Heart" was a one shot.
My money is on yes...

> Jan Kyuss Kyuss

Is this still going to come out? They were on a Chameleon subsidiary, as
I recall. And Chameleon went belly-up last week. Elektra will probably
pick up a few releases, but will this be one?

> 1 Feb * <various> NBA Jam Session

Oh yeah, this'll be great...

>15 Feb * TBTBT Too Bad To Be True

Hey, a group named after the perfect review of the new NKOTB!!

>15 Feb * Rob Wasserman Trios

He says he and his wife plan to stop when they get to hexatuplets.

> Mar Peter Gabriel <title unavailable> [JG2]

Really? A new album only two years since the last one? Not a soundtrack?
Not the sources for some album? Not a compilation? Not a benefit jobbie?
Oops, just got buzzed by a low-flying pig.

> Mar * Stone Roses Second Coming

Coming--what? five years?--after the debut. I'd say if it stiffs bigtime,
they'll be a good lesson in this for all involved. When you're starting
out, worry more about your career than that million dollar advance,
I'd opine...

> Mar * Sam Phillips Martinis And Bikinis

Still on Virgin?

> Mar * Cheap Trick <title unavailable>

Produced by Ted Templeton. Their debut for Warner Brothers. Expect a very
big promotional push. And a lot fewer schlocky hack-written ballads. Though
I doubt it'll be a pinch on their first/best few albums.

Um, unless I'm very much mistaken Deee-lite already *has* released a
follow-up album to the one that "Groove" was on. It sank like a stone,
and had nearly zero airplay (here in the Netherlands, that is).

Definitely one-hit wonders, I'd say...

Yes, there have been two albums. But a lot of groups go through a
"sophomore slump" and go on to produce a decent third effort. Personally,
I wasn't too impressed by the first one, either, so I don't have
high expectations. And I'd suspect strongly that if this one bombs,
Elektra won't stick with them for a fourth.
