No, the subject line isn't a miss print. MTV *does* have a dance show now. I
just saw it a few minutes ago :) . It's called the Grind, is on at 5 PM, and
bares no resemblence to the old, hip-hop Grind except that it's situated in a
fake club. Today they played -- they don't show videos on this but that's no
big deal since it's the songs that count -- "Fired Up", "Ooh Aah", a few other
songs, and had Jocelyn Enriquez perform "Do You Miss Me" and "A Little Bit of
Ecstacy" live. Quite cool :) .

This show is far from perfect, but it is very good by MTV standards. At least
they now finally seem to realize that there is a bit more to life than Bush,
the Notorious BIG, and the (un)Real World. And at least dance music now gets
some MTV exposure as opposed to the big fat zero it got last year. I hope this
is a sign of things to come.

I most certainly agree with you on this one....some real music education
should start to happen. I wonder why it took so long?? MTV is such a
strong influence on the young people and things will finally
change.....because in major cities like Pittsburgh, radio isn't cutting
it as far as dance music promotion goes.

MTV Europe has some cool dance shows, featuring interviews with top DJ's
and remixers (Patrick Prins was cool when he appeared). The one I've
watched most is presented by Simone Angel (who also happens to be quite
fit. Bonus.).

It WAS pretty cool, except for the annoying video effects (I guess they were
shooting for that U2 "Discoteque" look). I particularly liked all the cuties
bouncing around bra-less (and with tube tops no less)!

It's definately a rip-off of "Electric City" on Much Music Canada (the
curtains, the DJ, the guest DJ's (they had Frankie Knuckles on a couple of
weeks ago) and the chick hosting it).

I catch it at 7:00 a.m. They ran two weeks of the new grind but now they have
been back to old repeats (from YEARS ago) for the last two weeks. The one you
described was aired about three weeks ago. I hope they decided to keep the new
format, even if they did have a fake DJ. She does a good job of faking it, all
the way down to having three TT's (of course they never use the third one)
and a Urei mixer!

The one major problem I noticed was the time restraints. They try to fit too
much music into a half an hour. The dj starts walking all over the words in
order to mix in the next song.

Add Phoenix to that list as well.

On Friday (7/4), MTV actually repeated the 3-week old show that Tom
described, so it's not really a "late" post ;-)

Too many commercials too. And while it's great that MTV is devoting at
least some of its airtime to dance, I sure wish that they'd expand "The
Grind" to an hour.

That's what I was saying.

I caught a new show this morning... perhaps they are back to airing the new
ones.

They had the nerve to put the alternative rock group Sugar Ray on the show, no
less. (Just because their song "FLY" has a sampled hip-hop beat and Supa Cat
does a rap??? Gimme a BREAK! It's still a bunch of white dudes with guitars
and STP-wannabe hairdos!)

and I'd prefer to see the videos to the song instead of dancers. I can
see dancers at a club but there is NO outlet for people to see videos
to dance music except for the crumbs MTV tosses us.

Peace.Out.

Are you sure she was a fake DJ. I thought she was real (I'm not a DJ
by the way.) what indicated to you that she was fake?

peace.out.

seriously, the commericals for like Dance Mix and Ultimate Dance Party
have more video clips than a whole week on MTV.

oh and about the "Fly" video by Sugar Ray, was the the Boogaloo Shrimp I
saw?! He looks... older! :P. Still got them old school moves though..

I've heard that The Box is dance-friendly, but unfortunately most people,
me included :( , can't get that. As for MTV, I still think that they'll add
dance videos eventually, but unfortunately I have this sinking feeling that
it won't happen until their scared cow, "alternative", dies off completely.
So we're probably stuck with the alt-plus-rap-plus-realworld channel we love
to hate for the forseeable future :( . Heck, even MTV Europe disses dance!
The way MTV acts you'd think their life depended on "alternative" or something!
Oh well, at least since they don't play dance music they can't directly
influence it.

While on this topic does anyone know of a webpage on which one can view dance
vids via quicktime or something? If so, please let me know. Who knows, maybe
there's some internet video channel out there.

One more thing. As much as it sucks that MTV pretends dance music doesn't
exist, there is one positive aspect to this that we should take advantage of.
Remember how "alternative" fans for years put down dance music for being "MTV
shit"?? How it "wasn't real music" because of that?? Well, shouldn't we
inform them what the MTV shit is now ;) ??

I actually met the head of the Box on Saturday night who seemed very
interested to talk about the dance video thing. Apparently, they've been
bombarded in the UK where the Box is also on the air.

Who knows , a miracle might happen

I live in the Wash DC area, where the Box shows only country music
videos, alas, not exactly my favorites. It would be nice if they'd
expand their line up here!

With thanks.
