Some bands whose superb albums I've bought in just the last 5 years
or so seem to have disappeared. Sometimes this is a blessing in
disguise as when the Housemartins splintered into Beats International
and Beautiful South, thus doubling my pleasure. But now I can't seem
to find anything by Beats International since their second album,
Excursion on the Version. Does anybody know what happened to them?

Another band whose albums beyond their debut I would love to get my
hands on is The Chimes. Any news on their current activities,
reincarnations, etc.?

Please help an old fart who only got into Green Day after
Woodstock '94 find more stuff by these great bands.

P.S. Any Brooklynites out there who go to Lauterbach's?

I agree with you on the double pleasure statement.
Beats International is (I believe) no more. Their mastermind and
ex-Housemartins bassist Norman Cook as just issued a new album
under a new "disguise" : Freak Power. From what I've read in reviews,
the album is quite good although in a less poppy style than Beats Int.
Expect more of a dub, rap album.

I don't know what happened to the rest of Beats Int'l, eg Norman Cook, but I
know that Lindy Layton went to did some solo work, but wasn't very successful
at it. That's all!

Norman Cook from Beats Int. (and also of the Housemartins fame) formed a
great acid-jazz band Freakpower. Their 'Drive-Thru Booty' CD is absolute
must (although it doesn't remind of Beats anyhow). The only other band
member is some guy with a great voice (too bad his name escapes me).
There were three singles - 'Turn On, Tune In and Cope Out', 'Rush' and
'Get In Touch' - but none of them became a hit. They have a pretty good
airplay here in Israel.

Lindy Layton, Beats vocalist, started a solo career. She had a top 40 hit
in UK in 1993 (can't recall the title), and it sucked.

Pauline Henry, Chimes' lead singer', also went solo. She released an LP
named 'Pauline' about a year ago, and three of her singles went Top 40,
with the cover of Bad Co's 'Feel Like Making Love' being the biggest
hit (around #14, i think). Two others were 'Too Many People' (#38) and
'Can't Take Your Love' (#30). There was another one last spring, but it
peaked around #60...

Hope that helps...
