7. This week's top 50:
Last Tuesday night's 16th Annual ARIA awards, held at the Sydney Super
Dome, showcased Australian artists and music. The biggest winner was
Kylie Minogue who walked away with four awards - Highest Selling Album
(for "Fever"), Highest Selling Single (for "Can't Get You Out Of My
Head"), Best Pop Release (for the "Fever" album) and Single Of The Year
(for "Can't Get You Out Of My Head"). In addition, Kylie received an
outstanding achievement award and was there on the night to enjoy the
presentations. In traditional post-ARIA awards chart action, artists
that were nominated for awards, won awards or performed at the ceremony
enjoy chart boosts on the albums chart this week. Kasey Chambers, who
picked up three awards for Best Country Album, Best Female Artist and
Album Of The Year, sees her four-times platinum chart-topping "Barricades
and Brickwalls" album bullet from 33 to 4 this week, while her new single,
"If I Were You", lands just outside the top 50. As expected, Kylie
Minogue's "Fever" album rebounds from 18 to 9, having just gone six times
platinum after spending more than a year in the charts. Silverchair's
"Diorama" album re-enters the top 50 at number 12 thanks to their Best
Rock Album award and their performance at the awards. George also
re-enter the charts at number 12 with "Polyserena" after they were
presented with the Best New Artist's Album award. Other artists to
enjoy increased albums sales thanks to the ARIA Awards or performances
include Taxiride, Alex Lloyd, The Vines, Machine Gun Fellatio and Hi-5.
Back to the top 50 singles chart this week, and there's been a big
shake up in the top 10. Last week's number one debut, "The Ketchup
Song" by Spanish sisters, Las Ketchup, drops back to number two thanks
to another number one debut this week. Shakira, Tenacious D and Wyclef
Jean all leave the top 10, forced out by the three top 10 debuts in this
week's chart. An incredible 10 singles enter the top 50 for the first
time this week. Coupled with one re-entry, this sees 11 of the singles
in last week's top 50 disappear from this week's chart.
1. DILEMMA - Nelly featuring Kelly Rowland
Beyonce Knowles, from the all-girl group Destiny's Child, tasted
solo success outside of the group back in August when her single
"Work It Out", from the soundtrack to the Austin Powers' Goldmember
movie, made the top 25. However, her fellow group member, Kelly
Rowland had done much better. Kelly has teamed up with American
rapper Nelly on the radio friendly track "Dilemma", which features on
Nelly's current top 5 album, "Nellyville". "Dilemma" simultaneously
debuts at number one on the UK, Irish and Australian charts this
week while spending yet another week at number one on the U.S.
Billboard singles chart. Both Nelly and Kelly are no strangers
to chart success in Australia. As part of Destiny's Child, Kelly
enjoyed a chart topping single in 2000 with "Say My Name" and later
on, a string of other massive top 5 hits including "Jumpin' Jumpin'",
"Independent Women Part 1" and "Bootylicious". Nelly has also had
his fair share of top 5 hits over the last 12 months or so, including
"Ride Wit Me" (number 4, September 2001), "Girlfriend" (number 2,
April 2002) and "Hot In Herre" (number 3, July 2002).
Nelly and Kelly Rowland's single is the second record in two weeks
to debut at number one, with last week's number one debut being from
Las Ketchup with "The Ketchup Song (Asereje)". So when was the last
time we number one debuts in successive weeks? We only have to
go as far back as February this year when Kylie Minogue's number
one debut with "In Your Eyes" was succeeded by Shakira's "Whenever,
Wherever", which debuted at number one in the following week.
4. THE TIDE IS HIGH (GET THE FEELING) - Atomic Kitten
Atomic Kitten are a 3-piece UK female group who first made an
impact on the Australian charts when their ballad, "Whole Again",
went all the way to number 2 back in June last year. Their next
single release, "Eternal Flame", which was a contemporary cover of
the Bangles' 1989 number one hit, became a world-wide chart-topper.
However the release of "Eternal Flame" in Australia was botched by
their record company who decided that instead of giving it an outright
single release, it should instead feature as the second track on a
2001 re-release of Atomic Kitten's 1999 single, "Right Now".
Now in 2002, Atomic Kitten have a new album set for release titled
"Feels So Good". The first single from that album was the track
"It's OK" which peaked at number 24 recently. This week, Atomic
Kitten release the second single from their new album. "The Tide
Is High" is a remake of a song that Blondie made a big hit back in
1980 - however during this song they switch back and forth between
singing "The Tide Is High" and a new song called "Get The Feeling",
resulting in a rather creative cover version that has much original
input. Thanks to widespread radio and TV airplay and the publicity
surrounding the single's impressive 3 week run at number one on the
UK charts, "The Tide Is High" crashes into the Australian charts at
number 4 this week. Those of you who have seen the music video for
this song will notice group member Natasha looking rather pregnant
in the clip, however she has since given birth to a baby boy.
Trivia buffs will be interested to learn that Australia's own
Kylie Minogue wrote the title track of Atomic Kitten's new
album, "Feels So Good".
9. LIKE I LOVE YOU - Justin Timberlake
Justin Timberlake is the recognizable face of the American boy band,
'N Sync. The group's biggest single to date was their five week
chart topper "Bye Bye Bye" from March 2000. Justin has released
a solo single titled "Like I Love You", with many people calling
him the new Michael Jackson after seeing his moves and style in
the music video for this single. "Like I Love You" is this week's
third new entry into the top 10, coming in at number 9.
19. 24/7 (CRAZY 'BOUT YOUR SMILE) - Nikki Webster
On Monday, Nikki Webster releases her second album which is titled
"Bliss". This is the follow-up to her platinum top 5 album "Follow
Your Heart" which was released late last year. The first single
from "Bliss" was the track "Something More Beautiful" which debuted
at number 13 back in August. Nikki has now released the second
single from her new album, a track titled "24/7 (Crazy 'Bout Your
Smile)" which enters the chart at number 19 this week. You can

20. ALL MY LIFE - Foo Fighters
This week the Foo Fighters release their brand new album, "One By
One". It is available in two different formats - a standard 11
track CD, and a version that includes a bonus DVD which features the
music videos of their last two singles, "The One" (number 21, March
2002) and "All My Life". "All My Life" is the group's brand new
single, becoming their highest charting single since "Monkey Wrench"
(number 17, May 1997) and "This Is A Call" (number 9, July 1995).
30. HELP ME - Nick Carter
Nick Carter is the youngest member of the American male group, the
Backstreet Boys. Like Justin Timberlake from 'N Sync this week,
Nick Carter also tries his hand at a solo career. However his
debut solo single, "Help Me", hasn't been the commercial success
you would expect from a member of a band that has notched up a
very strong and consistant six top 5 hit singles between 1997 and
2000. "Help Me" enters the Australian singles chart at number 30
after a disappointing number 17 debut in the UK last week.
35. CRY - Faith Hill
"Cry" is the title of American country singer Faith Hill's new
album. Like Shania Twain and LeAnn Rimes, Faith Hill's music
has crossed over into the mainstream market, which was particularly
evident with the release of dance remixes of her single, "The
Way You Love Me", from last year. Faith Hill's "Cry" album
debuts at number 10 on the albums chart this week while the
title track, fully priced at $9.95, comes in at number 35 on the
singles chart. Her biggest hit to date was the track "This Kiss"
from 1999, which peaked at number 4 and spent an impressive 18 weeks
within the top 50.
39. ALL EYEZ ON ME - Monica
American urban singer, Monica, makes her first appearance on the
Australian singles charts this millennium with her latest offering.
"All Eyez On Me" debuts at number 39 this week, and features a sample
of Michael Jackson's "Pretty Young Thing" from his "Thriller" album
of 1982. Monica's biggest hit to date was her duet in 1998 with
Brandy - "The Boy Is Mine" - which went all the way to number 3.
41. I DO (WANNA GET CLOSE TO YOU) - 3LW featuring P. Diddy and Loon
3LW (3 Little Women) are three New Jersey teenagers who enjoyed a
top 30 hit last year with the R&B track "No More". 3LW recently
featured on Naughty By Nature's single, "Feel's Good", and this
week they team up with chart heavyweight P. Diddy on the track
"I Do (Wanna Get Close To You)". This single comes in at number 41
this week and can be found on the group's new album, "A Girl Can
Mack".
50. JUST THE WAY YOU ARE - Milky
This week's final new entry is a pop track by Milky. Milky, whose
real name is Sabrina, grew up in Germany and then moved to London.
She has a German father and Egyptian mother who taught her
professional belly-dancing, which is evident in the music video for
hew new single, "Just The Way You Are", which debuts at number 50
this week.
