<1> Bryan Adams spent just one week at number one with ``HAVE YOU EVER REALLY
LOVED A WOMAN'', from the movie ``Don Juan de Marco''. This week,
another single from a movie soundtrack captures the number one spot
on the Australian singles chart. The movie, ``BATMAN FOREVER'',
has broken box-office records across Australia and the world and
the soundtrack album for that movie bullets up to number 9 on
the Australian albums chart this week. On the singles chart, the
results are even more spectacular. Ireland's U2 debut at number
one with ``HOLD ME, THRILL ME, KISS ME, KILL ME'' - the first
single to be lifted off that soundtrack, which features recordings
from a whole host of artists including a solo track by INXS front-man,
Michael Hutchence. In Australia, debuts at number one on the
singles charts are very rare events. U2 make their single only
the third single in this decade to debut at number one. While
this is an achievement in itself - to achieve the ultimate
feat by debuting at number one - U2 can almost claim a monopoly
on singles debuting at number one in Australia for this decade!
On the 1st of November 1991, U2's ``THE FLY'', the first single
from their huge ``ACTUNG BABY'' album, debuted at number one on
the Australian singles chart. It was not till almost two years
later that the event was repeated. This time, America's Meatloaf
entered the Australian singles chart at number one, on the
3rd of September 1993, with ``I'D DO ANYTHING FOR LOVE (BUT I WON'T
DO THAT)''. And now, just under two years later, U2 do it for s
second time with ``HOLD ME, THRILL ME, KISS ME, KILL ME''. The title
of this single has been causing a bit of confusion because early in
the year, Gloria Estefan's album of covers of her favorite songs,
``HOLD ME, THRILL ME, KISS ME'' was a huge hit over the world,
as was the title track from that album. But you can be guaranteed
U2's song is original and totally different - both in content and
in style.
<8> U2's massive debut at number one has made the rest of the chart
events this week seem trivial in comparison! Only one song
actually moves up within the top 10 as the rest of the singles
either hold firm or drop. Take That will be in Australia
in a few short months - riding high on the platinum and number
one success of their current single, ``BACK FOR GOOD'', which
is at number 8 this week. Despite selling ship loads of
records throughout Europe and most of the world, the U.S.
still remains an unconquered market for them. The latest
news is that ``BACK FOR GOOD'' has been released in the U.S.
and it will be interesting to see if they can woo the American
audience with their fresh and contemporary pop music.
