HEY, THERE, ANI GIRL:
IT’S DIFRANCO’S SUMMER TOUR, BY GEORGE
Move over, Lilith. Hasta luego, Lollapallooza. Furthur? Schmurthur! If
singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco has any say in the matter, the summer tour on
everyone’s must-see list for 1998 will be ... George.
Don’t be looking for a Clooney, a Clinton, a Jones or a Jetson. This “George”
is Ani’s own name for her upcoming 18-city megamonster ampitheater tour,
winding its way from the New York island back to California, up the West Coast,
and ending up criss-crossing Canada this June and July. Why George? No one
knows but the inscrutable folksinger, and she’s not telling.
George will be swinging through a jungle of 3-10,000-seat venues, including
Battery Park (at the foot of Manhattan), Wolf Trap (not too far from
Washington, DC), Great Woods (fairly close to Boston), and Red Rocks (within
shouting distance of Boulder, CO). Joining Ani in Team George are longtime
drummer Andy Stochansky, medium-time bassist Jason Mercer, and still-kinda-new
keyboard player/background vocalist Julie Wolf. As an opening act, Ani has
chosen New Orleans’ ReBirth Brass Band, whose irresistably dancable mix of jazz
and funk suggests an approach to life best summed up in the title of their
Shanachie Records release, We Come to Party. Good thing, too, since we hear
George is gonna be quite the party animal.
