Good evening from Tokio.

I'm very lucky to have so many replies from all over the world! I
want to give all my thankfulness to those who wrote me.
And, they are really anxious to know which Japanese artists are
the most popular now in Japan. That's why I've decided to post ORICON
chart, the most vivid Japanese popular music ranking.
This article is in great cooperation with Mr. Hisashi Kobayashi,
who edited Japanese version for JUNET. I appreciate his pains and troubles.

***Unbelievable action by Chage & Aska! They've sold 1,360,000 copies
in 2 weeks and former works also reentered these days! In addtion,
Yosui Inoue reached Top 10 again, which impresses us with the long and
increasing sales by some artists. What comes next?

By the way, who on earth are Chage & Aska? They are semi-veteran male
duo team, whose works are generally categorized "New Music." "New Music"
is the most popular category of Japanese pop music derived from "Folk
Music."

It's so hard a work to explain what Japanese poplar songs are like,
but I hope I can give it to you little by little.

Many thanks for reading our article.

they released last year?

Hello from Tokio.

I'm so happy to receive many letters from overseas. I'd like to
thank you all that read our article.
This time I'll try to answer the questions you gave me. Sorry I
can't answer all.

In early 80's, Yellow Magic Orchestra was introduced all over the
world, and they raised some of their works. In JAZZ scene, Sadao
Watanabe has been a famous artist in US. In New-Age category, Kitaro's
works have been highly appreciated. That's all I know about the
musicians popular in the foreign countries(especially US or UK).
Generally, there is a jinx that the artists who goes to America will
lose their popularity in Japan during the tour, so there are few
creators touring around the world without losing his good position.

Hmm... I know Susumu Hirasawa, who was a former member of P-Model,
Hajime Tachibana, a former member of The Plastics. I think they're
industrial, but this is my personal opinion. I suggest you find
P-Model's or The Plastics' works.
About Techno-Dance music, you'd better pick up TMN or B'z, ones of
the most popular Electronic Pop Band.

A Japanese CD costs generally 2,800-3,000 yen, in Australian dollar,
28-30 AU$. In other currencies, for example US dollar $21-23. Maybe
this makes you surprised and say "It's little too expensive!" The
fact depends on the oligopolic system of Japanese music market.
And I'm afraid there will be transportation costs. I don't know how
much they are.

If only they WERE that cheap in Australia. Regular and local releases
are in the neighbourhood of A$25 to A$28 (although some recent releases
have been getting a bit better - the Prices Surveillance Authority report
into the price of Australian music releases has the big boys shitting in
their pants ;-). In Brisbane, the only Japanese pressings I have seen
"regularly" available in record shops (import stores only, of course) have
been in the neighbourhood of A$40 to A$45 (and some of these were simply
Ryuichi S. rereleases).

In one dance music store in town, they have had a bunch of those 3-inch
CD singles with the backing card/plastic, and they were trying to sell them
for $45 to $50, and a few Japan-only compilation-type things (like a Kylie
Minogue and a Dead Or Alive) for $60!!!! Needless to say, they've been
mysteriously marked down after sitting in the shop for six months :-)

That's one thing I *really* like about a lot of Japanese CDs: the list
price printed on the packaging. It helps when you have a shop trying
to sell Y1,800 discs ($15-18 being a fair price at current exchange rates,
with overseas shipping and all) for $30 or more. So far the record is one
local shop trying to unload Arcadia's SO RED ROSE -- that's what the
Japanese copy's called :-) -- for $45. It lists at Y2,300!

Same in the UK. My local HMV has had the Japanese imports of the DM singles
from _Violator_ on it's shelves for a while now. Hardly surprising when you
consider they are #19.99 ($35) each. OK, they've got a lot of tracks, but
that much for a single?!? What's the original price in yen, anyone know?
(I didn't have a chance to check the packaging).

Worse still is the HMV price for the Japanese Gary Numan _Asylum_ boxed
sets - I've seen them at #58 a shot (that's $104) when it's perfectly
possible (if you search around) to pick them up for #30 a time.

I bought my DM maxisingles while in Japan. They were all 1800 yen each. This
would be less than 9 pounds each, maybe 7 or 8.

There is something wrong with the prices listed above. I am confident every
one knows what.

Well yeah, but you have to consider that these maxis have almost as much, if
not more, material on them than most full-length albums today. Quite a lot of
alternate versions and remixes, plus alternate versions and remixes of the
bonus tracks too!

Ooops, I don't think there's anything wrong with the ORIGINAL prices, after
all they are as long as an album. I think there is something wrong with
people in the UK asking 20pounds. Since I am about to go to the UK, it looks
like it's "vanilla" DM maxisingles for me.
