7. This week's top 50:

My gosh, she did it again! At the start of July, Kylie Minogue debuted
at number one with her brand new single, "Spinning Around". This marked
a return to the top of the Australian charts for Kylie, whose last number
one single before that was 1994's "Confide In Me". This week, the
second single off Kylie's forthcoming "Light Years" album also enters
the chart at number one. The new single, titled "On A Night Like This"
has been getting steady airplay over the last few weeks, with the
music video for that song having to be re-made as the original version
was deemed too raunchy for general viewing. Believe it or not, "On
A Night Like This" is a cover version of a song by Pandora, who had
success in 1999 with "A Little Bit" (top 10) and "Smile 'N' Shine".
Records are broken with Kylie's achievments this week. It's the first
time an Australian artist has had two number one debuts in the same year,
and Kylie now joins Madonna as the only artist to have two number one
debuts in a year for at least the last 12 years. For Kylie, it is the
first time since 1988 that she has had two number one singles in the one
year. 1988 saw her top the charts with "I Should Be So Lucky" and "Got
To Be Certain". In the UK, while "Spinning Around" also debuted at
number one a few months ago, "On A Night Like This" unfortunately only
manages to enter at number 2 over there. Kylie's remarkable achievement
this week cements her position as Australia's Queen of Pop and the
most successful female artist to ever emerge from this country.

Kylie's number one debut marks the second song to enter the singles
chart at number one over the last four weeks. As such, this year
is shaping up as the year where high debuts are the order of the day.
We can compare the number of high debuts this year with what happened
in previous years.

------------------------------------------------------------
TOP 10 TOP 5 TOP 3 NUMBER ONE
YEAR DEBUTS DEBUTS DEBUTS DEBUTS
------------------------------------------------------------
1989 6 3 1 0
1990 6 2 0 0
1991 9 6 4 1
1992 7 2 0 0
1993 8 3 2 1
1994 13 7 2 0
1995 16 10 6 1
1996 16 8 6 3
1997 21 8 6 2
1998 9 3 1 0
1999 19 13 8 0
2000 (so far...) 21 11 8 7
------------------------------------------------------------

While Kylie's debut at number one overshadows the rest of the chart
events this week, it's interesting to see one of the biggest drops
out of the top 50 occur this week. Last week, Boyz II Men debuted
at number 13 with "Pass You By". This week, they drop completely
out of the top 50. Only one other song over the last 12 years has ever
completely dropped out of the top 50 from a higher position than number
13. In 1994, Nirvana's "About a Girl" debuted at number 4 and dropped
out of the top 50 the week after. The reason for this being that the
single was produced in limited numbers, so all stock had sold within the
first week.

The last time an Italian artist had big success in Australia was when
Eiffel 65 dominated the world charts at the end of 1999 and start of
this year. "Blue" was a 9 week chart topper and their follow up,
"Move Your Body", peaked at number 4 early this year. This week,
Italy's latest export is a DJ called Cristiano Spiller. He teams up
with Sophie Ellis-Bextor who performs the vocals on his latest hit titled
"Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)". This song recently topped the UK
charts and comes in at number 12 on the Australian charts this week.

America's Christina Aguilera first burst onto the music scene back
in 1999 when her pop hit "Genie In A Bottle" made it to number 2 in
Australia. She followed that song up with "What A Girl Wants", which
went top 5 for her back in February this year. The fourth single to
be released off Christina's self-titled album is called "Come On Over",
and it enters the chart at number 18 this week.

Other new entries include Whitney Houston's duet with George Michael
on the song "If I Told You That", which comes in at number 37. South
Australian band, the Superjesus, return with a new song called
"Gravity" at number 38. While Toni Braxton follows up her top 5 hit
from earlier this year, "He Wasn't Man Enough", with this week's number
44 hit, "Spanish Guitar".

Special congratulations go to Vanessa Amorosi this week. Her single,
"Absolutely Everybody", which was regarded as the anthem of the new
millennium celebrations in Australia, has debuted in the UK at number
7 this week. Her performance last Friday night of the song "Heroes
Live Forever" at the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games looks
like it will propel this 19 year old's singing career to new heights
internationally. Already she has had three big singles in Australia,
"Have A Look" (number 13, certified gold), "Absolutely Everybody",
(number 6, certified platinum), and the ballad "Shine" (number 4,
certified platinum). Plus her debut album, "The Power", topped the
Australian albums chart when released 6 months ago, and it had sold in
excess of 140,000 copies. Up until now, Vanessa's success has been
limited to the Australian and New Zealand markets, however this week
marks the start of what looks like will be a truly international career.

9. This week's feature song lyrics

------------------------------------
ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS - Kylie Minogue
------------------------------------
Don't, say, it's like a fantasy
When, you, know this is how it should be
You kiss me, I'm falling
Can you hear me calling
You touch me, I want you
Feels like I've always known you

CHORUS:
On a night like this
I wanna stay forever, stay forever
On a night like this
Just wanna be together
On a night like this

Now, I'm, getting closer to you
Hold, me, I just can't be without you
You kiss me, I'm falling
It's your name I'm calling
You touch me, I want you
Feels like I've always known you

(CHORUS)

Seems I've known you a lifetime
Now it's time to make you mine
On a night like this
On a night like this
Oh

You kiss me, I'm falling
You touch me

On a night like this
Just wanna be together

(CHORUS)

You kiss me, I'm falling
You touch me
On a night like this
You kiss me, I'm falling
You touch me
On a night like this
You kiss me, I'm falling
You touch me

----------------------------------------
GROOVEJET (IF THIS AIN'T LOVE) - Spiller
----------------------------------------
Holding you closer
It's time that I told you
Everything's going to be fine
Know that you're leaving
And try to belive it
Take me one step at a time

CHORUS:
If this ain't love
Why does it feel so good?
If this ain't love
Why does it feel so good?

Think of tomorrow
We beg, steal or borrow
To make all we can in the sun
While we are moving
The music is soothing
Troubles we all have begun

(CHORUS)

Will you remember me boy?
Remember me
Boy will ya?

Just for this lifetime
You can be my past time
Here are the rules of our play
In it together
Till I know you better
Darling, Darling
What do you say?

(CHORUS)

If this ain't love
Why does it feel so good?

-----------------------------------------------------
COME ON OVER (ALL I WANT IS YOU) - Christina Aguilera
-----------------------------------------------------
Come on over, come on over, baby
Come on over, come on over, baby
Come on over, come on over, baby
Come on over, come on over, baby

Hey boy, don't you know
I got something going on (yes, I do)
All my friends are gonna come
Gonna party all night long
I know, you know, I just want us to go
The fun we'll have, you'll never be alone
So boy, won't you come?
We will party 'til the dawn
Listen to me

CHORUS:
All I want is you
Come over here baby
All I want is you
You make me go crazy
All I want is you
Now baby don't be shy
You better cross the line
I'm gonna love you right
All I want is you

Come on over, come on over, baby
Come on over, come on over, baby

I want you to know
You could be the one for me (yes you could)
You've got all I'm looking for
You've got personality
I know, you know
I'm gonna give you more
I know I've never felt this way before
So boy won't you come
Won't you come and open the door
Listen to me

(CHORUS)

Come on over, come on over, baby
Come on over, come on over, baby
Come on over, come on over, baby
Come on over, come on over, baby
Come on over, come on over, baby

Now baby don't be shy
You better cross the line
I'm gonna love you right
All I want is you

--------------------------------------
ROME WASN'T BUILT IN A DAY - Morcheeba
--------------------------------------
CHORUS:
You and me we're meant to be
Walking free in harmony
One fine day we'll fly away
Don't you know that Rome wasn't built in a day

In this day and age it's so easy to stress
'Cause people are strange and you can never second guess
In order to love child we got to be strong
I'm caught in the crossfire why can't we get along

'Cause

(CHORUS)

I'm having a daydream, we're getting somewhere
I'm kissing your lips and running fingers through your hair
I'm as nervous as you 'bout making it right
Though we know we were wrong, we can't give up the fight
Oh no

'Cause

(CHORUS x2)

You and me (you and me) we're meant to be (meant to be)
Walking free (walking free) in harmony (in harmony)
One fine day (one fine day) we'll ran away
(we gonna ran away, we gonna ran away)
Don't you know that Rome wasn't built in a day

You and me (you and me) we're meant to be (meant to be)
Walking free (walking free) in harmony (in harmony)
One fine day (one fine day) we'll fly away
(we gonna ran away, we gonna ran away)
Don't you know that Rome wasn't built in a day
