It's that time of year once more folks when it behoves me to remind the young
and innocent that Nick was the principal force behind the group Brinsley Scwharz
from 1969 to 1975. BS, and their sister "pub rock" groups in the UK, are
credited with keeping the original spirit of good time r & r alive during a
period when SOME artists tended to excess and pompous circumlocution. they
toured with Wings during McCartneys "back to basics" 1972 tour, released six
LPs, including two all time classic singles "Country Girl" (72) and "What's So
Funny 'Bout Peace, Love and Understanding" (74), both written by Nick Lowe.

During this period the band also backed up straight-forward rockers Frankie
Miller and Dave Edmunds (on the Stardust soundtrack, uncredited), the latter
being the foundation for a long term relationship.

The band itself grew tighter and tighter, when they split and half of them
formed the basis for the Rumour, it was no surprise that Graham Parker, the
man in search of a band who liked both the stones and dylan, would pick up
on the Band-like Rumour (whose pioneering recordings were produced by Nick,
as were Elvis Costello's). Another old BS member, Ian Gomm, also forged a
partially (commercially) successful solo career with four great albums.
This is the man who co-wrote Cruel To Be Kind with Nick fifteen years ago.

Lowe started a solo career which resulted in several late 70s successes,
and production work for Graham Parker and Elvis Costello.

Hiss solo career from 75 to 81 was intertwined with that of Dave Edmunds
and Rockpile, yielding lots more excellent songs. He split with DE in 1981,
married Carlene Carter, and picked up a new band, including Martin Belmont
(ex- Ducks Deluxe, Rumour). Since then he's slowed down a bit, producing
and writing and playing with Carlene Carter (although they broke up also),
Paul Carrack, and working again with Elvis Costello and Dave Edmunds..

Carlene Carter has a new single out, LP will follow. She'll be on Nashville
Now on TNN on June 7th.

A Nick Lowe Discography (first attempt)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All songs written and produced by Nick Lowe unless specified otherwise.
{ } denotes song on a contemporary album. (ps) denotes picture sleeve for
single. (l) denotes live recording. all dates following label and number
are UK release dates; r. sep 78 denoted recording date.

Nick joined Kippington Lodge towards the end of their career, and may be on
the last two of their five singles. Band changed name to Brinsley Schwarz
(after their guitarist) in 1969, Nick assuming chief songwriting duties.
Records released:

"Brinsley Schwarz" [1970]
"Despite it All" [1970]
"Silver Pistol" [1971]
"Nervous on the Road" [1972]
"Please Don't Ever Change" [1973]
"Original Golden Greats" [1974] {compilation LP}
"New Favourites" [1974]
"15 Thoughts of Brinsley Schwarz" [1978] {compilation LP}

also on some other compliation/live albums, and singles.

Band crumbles in spring of 1975. Several members end up in the Rumour.

What follows attempts to document Nick Lowe the writer and recording artist.
We do not consider his extensive production work at all, so there !

Songs without writer's credits are Nick Lowe compositions.

Cruel to be Kind (NL/Gomm) [demo they say, Brinsley outtake perhaps]

[I have a theory about that one. The arrangement is quite different from the
second "hit" version, and the song was cowritten with Ian Gomm (almost certainly
back in 1974/5, before Brinsley Schwarz (the group) broke up. Could it be a
Brinsleys RECORDING too ? It sounds very like their last singles (although I
suppose there's no sign of Brinsley (the man)'s distinctive guitar, there again
NL may have edited it out ...).]

ELVIS IN WA march 78

>There's a decent one off a live radio shot called ''Elvis Goes to Washington
>and Dave Edmunds and Rockpile Don't,'' which features three sides of Elvis
>Costello, recorded at the Warren Theater in Wash. DC in 1978, and one
>side of Edmunds and Rockpile recorded at an unspecified NYC venue in 3/78;

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

>you just heard about - is called ''Nick Lowe & Dave Edmunds with Rockpile -
>DOWN DOWN DOWN,'' on ''Edinburgh Records Ltd. 22 Bedford St. Hanover London.''
>Great quality, as I recall, featuring Problems/Crying the Rain/Poor Jenny/When
>Will I Be Loved (more Everlys stuff, outtakes, wonderful), What Would Look the
>Best/I Knew the Bride/Blue Moon of Kentucky/Heartaches - all from a London
>Studio, August 1979; then Deborah/Breaking Glass/Let It Rock/Heart of the

>Long/I Knew the Bride/Breaking Glass/Down Down Down/She's So Fine/They Called
>it Rock/Falling In Love Again/Heart of the City - live at the Santa Monica
>Civic Auditorium, a show that D. and I saw, May 1978.
>

just says "Nick Lowe Dave Edmonds (sic)" in smallish print, with
"Rockpile" much larger underneath, and a painting that looks like a prison
with tall grass in the foreground. The spine says "Nick Lowe & Dave
Edmunds (spelled right this time!) with Rockpile -- Down Down Down", which
I suppose is the title. It's on Edinburgh Records, who have the balls to
not only give an address but also a copyright (date is 1980, unauthorized
duplication prohibited, ha ha).

The first seven tracks (Problems - Heartaches) are studio recordings from
August 79, Nick & Dave playing acoustic guitars. The rest of side two is
live in New York 78, excellent quality for a bootleg. The last two sides
are live at the Santa Monica Civic, May 78, decent quality but definitely
boot.
