Well, Ray Charles first sang this in 1961. The Stampeders did a remake
of it in 1976, featuring a phone conversation with Wolfman Jack.

Some obscure artist named Raymond Charles, though he likes to go by the
name of Ray.

Ray Charles. All I can tell you is that he didn't do it while working for
Atlantic, because it's not on the 53-59 boxed set.

I think there is a version by Ray Charles, but I'm not shure if its the
original one.

Ray Charles did "Hit The Road Jack" back in the early 60's. ('61?)
It hit number 1 in the U.S.

I suspect this song has been covered by many artists. The version that I recall
is done by Ray Charles.
