Hello,

I was following the Depeche Mode conversation about "Route 66" in either
this news group (or alt.rock-n-roll, I'm not sure which). Anyway, I bought
"Just Say Yo" that has "Behind The Wheel/Route 66" on it. I was telling a
friend about it, and he told me about a version he had heard on the radio &
has been trying to find ever since, but with no luck.
This version supposedly starts with an announcer who says "Can you name
this tune ..." or something like that. This version also has old-time
announcers sampled throughout the song. Unfortunately, I have never heard
this version, so I'm not sure exactly how it goes. Anyway, it sounds pretty
interesting.
If anyone has any information regarding this song, I'd be happy to hear
about it. My friend will be in London for a full year starting next week, so
please tell me if the song is available in England.
Also, I'm sorry if this has been discussed before; the postings I read
were about the version on "Just Say Yo".

Thanks in advance,
Greg

Considering how popular Route 66 has been, DM sure seems to be doing their
best to bury it! Almost all the mixes of it that I've been able to find
have been megamixes with Behind The Wheel. I prefer Route 66 all by
itself, thank you very much . . . !

The mix you're talking about is the Beatmasters remix, which appears as
the B-side to the 12" 12 BONG 15. That's UK import-only, and I don't
think that particular mix is available on CD, though DM has so many CDs
out it's hard to tell. Anyway, that's what he's looking for, and he
shouldn't have too much trouble finding it in England. Hope this
helps.

The 'Beatmasters Remix' is available on a West German 3" (I think - I know
I have it on cd though) - I am not sure, however, that this is the mix he
is referring to - there is a mix - I don't know its name but I am _sure_
it is not available on cd that has samples of Wolfman Jack talking about
regestering for the draft. Anyone know??? As far as I know there are three
'Route 66' cds out - they are:

1) 3" with Beatmasters Mix + 2
2) 5" with Shep-pettibone Remix + same 2
3) 5" US promo with six mixes

Well, here's the complete scam as I understand it -- "Route 66 (Remixed
By The Beatmasters)", the B-side to 12 BONG 15 (which I own and just
checked on), opens up with samples from a commercial for the "Name That
Tune" game show: "They come from everywhere to take the challenge ...
and if they can name it, they can claim it!" About 3:25 in, Wolfman
Jack pops up talking about registering for the draft. The track runs
6:18.

This is definitely the mix Greg was talking about, and is almost just
as definitely is the mix you're talking about. I don't think that
there's another Beatmasters remix of *just* Route 66. (I know there's
one of Behind The Wheel which runs 8:01 and turns up on the six-track
US promo, but Route 66 is nowhere to be found in that mix. That sounds
like it might be the one on the West German CD3.)

I think 12 BONG 15 is the single you're both looking for.

I used to be a big DM fan this single killed me.
Here are the versions I have:
7": BONG 15
Behind The Wheel (Remix) c/w Route 66
SIRE 7-27991
BtW (remix) b/w Route 66/Behind the Wheel (mega-single mix)
12":12 BONG 15
BtW (Remixed by Shep Pettibone) c/w Route 66 (remixed by the Beatmasters)
SIRE 20858-0
BtW/Rt66 (megamix),(megadub) b/w BtW (Extended remix),(beatmasters mix)

well only 4 singles, I guess that's not too bad. 10 different mixes-ugh! If
anyone wants a tape, I suppose I could fill a 60-minute deal with nothing
but Behind The Wheel. glllurg.

I'll check it out ...

The BIG news is that Warner is going to release a 5" of 'Personal Jesus'
(already banned some places) with *5* mixes of PJ and three other tracks -
sould be out very soon...

That just goes to show that Depeche is still willing to forego some profits
for respect of their music. According to the band, "Route 66" was a single
that was not meant to be. Apparently, a coupla DJ's and dance clubs got a
hold of a few backing tapes and the song took off, much to Dave and Martin's
chagrin, I believe.

Mode is trying to bury this song because the band doesn't like it and would
like to hear very little of it anymore. That also explains why they would
not play it at the Concert for the Masses despite repeated requests from the
fans. (and also they didn't have a guitar :-)

And trivia time: Do you know which song is DM's least favorite?

"Get the Balance Right" and look where that took them. When's the last time
they've played that song live? It appears they want to suppress "Route 66"
before it becomes as big as "Get the Balance Right"

From what I had heard DM wanted another song (some Beach Boys tune) but couldn't
get the rights to it so they did 'Route 66' as a joke - the rest is history.

I thought the announcer's voice on Route66 was Tom Kennedy from the old "Name
That Tune" show...ah well. Since I've only heard the song on the radio I also
thought it was something the DJ threw in to be annoying.
Re: DM not liking the song...that's more or less what Martin said when WDRE
interviewed him after it won for Best Song of the Year (which is a sad state
of affairs in itself).
Is/ when is the new DM out in the states?
