"Deconstructing Madonna"
Chip Wells has ambitions of being a scholar, a university professor.
He's read Plato and Aristotle. He's studied logic and rhetoric.
And he's watched MTV. That's how he got the idea to choose the Madonna
phenomenon for his doctoral thesis at Florida State. The material girl,
Wells told the Orlando Sentinel, is actually a "postmodern social construct."
He discusses this in a paper called "Madonna's 'Like a Prayer': A Critique
of a Critique of the Geritol Generation." He'll go into this more deeply in
his thesis, tentatively titled "Like a Thesis: A Postmodern Reading of
Madonna Videos." "I'm a fan because of the videos' complex intercultural
critiques," he said. "When Madonna grabs her crotch, the social order is
effectively transgressed."
