When I recently saw a gallery of Shakira with her naturally gorgeous
DARK hair, she looks incredibly beautiful. Most of these images
showing her with her beautiful dark hair appear to be intended for the
Latin American societies.
Latinas should be uncompromisingly proud of their genetic beauty, and
let their hair remain dark. Being who you are, being "natural," is
the sexiest trait of all.
I say this as a Northern European-American, myself naturally blond,
who admires female beauty in every form, naturally blond, redhead, and
of course, brunette.
(Not my sentiments on the whitebread thing, I'm just parroting what MTV and
other media outlets tell me.)

Actually, she hasn't had dark hair in quite a few years. The magazine I work
for did a photo shoot with her in early 1999 (when she was working with the
Estefans) and she was already a redhead then. She's been blonde for at least a
couple of years now. I think she just likes to change her hair color
periodically. And I like her as a blonde.

I never saw her with dark hair before reading this thread, you're
right, she looked so much better!
here's a gallery with dark-haired Shakira pictures-

Anyways I too prefered her with black hair.

*maybe it's just an LA thing but you see it all the time here.
They also have that dark lipliner, light colored lipstick look going on.
Though I don't think they're the only ones who do this. I *hate* that look.
I don't ever remember reading/hearing that. Sounds to me like modern
mythmaking or pseudoscience/sociology trying (yet again) to impose
present-day tastes on the ancient world. Though I could be wrong.
Does anyone who actually knows about history have an opinion?
Also, why the affected use of "puta", when as a self-proclaimed
"Northern European-American" you've got perfectly serviceable terms
such as "prostitute," or even the more pejorative "whore"? I hate
that sort of condescending inclusion of Spanish-language terms used
simply because one is discussing Spanish-speaking people. Like a
party, if it's being held by a Hispanic, is never just "a party," it
has to be "a fiesta." Piss off!

You sound pretty sure of your right to impose your beliefs of what/how
Latinas "should" be, Cupcake.
I do agree that the equation of "Northern European
White=Beautiful/Sexy" is an unhealthy and damaging mentality, and that
many of the rest of us have unfortunately internalised it. BUT, I
find it an amazing display of cheek for someone like you to presume to
"correct" it. It's simply none of your business.
You also demonstrate a pretty basic lack of knowledge if you assume
that every blonde Latina you see must be a fake blonde. In Shakira's
case it's undoubtedly true, but for others it simply isn't.
Other people have already pointed out the silliness of singling out
dark Latin American women for criticism when you've got European
Debbie Harrys and Madonnas and Marilyn Monroes, ad infinitum who ALSO
might consider being uncompromisingly proud of their genetic beauty.
Why not have a go at all of them?
Also, I'm Spanish (European, but "Latin" in terms of the European
definition of the word) & naturally fair-haired, but I dye my hair
black. Where does that fit into your scheme of things? Are you
shallow & vain enough to consider it some sort of sexual display? If
tomorrow I chose to bleach my hair white, would THAT be sexual
display? How about if I went (as I have done in the past) purple or
green? Or are you willing to concede that it may all be down to
nothing more than my own personal taste?
In any case, I can tell you that, believe it or not, you were not a
consideration when I made any of my choices. As hard as it may be for
you to understand, you, your tastes & your opinions are not the centre
of every Latina's life.

Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek are two main examples.
Also, I honestly think that JLO looks better with VERY dark brown or black
hair. She doesn't look all that great with blonde!
-Naz
Oye, there are dark people in Spain, but there are also lots of
(natural) blondes, redheads and plain mouse brown brunettes too. I
think it's great that Latinos are finally getting their due in Estados
Unidos, but I'm tired of having my identity erased by having all
Spanish-speaking cultures conflated into some big formless mass.

I don't think JLo looks that great no matter what color her hair is.

Her vulgar laugh and thoroughly mediocre intelligence are her most
unflattering features. God, listening to her prattle on self-importantly on
her career and love and such what not and such (know what I'm sayin'? yuk
yuk) makes you wonder about Afflecks supposed intelligence. Her love song to
him, Dear Ben, is supposedly a monument of insipid cliches. Whatever, hyuk
hyuk.
Ever seen the posters for The Cell?

Oh please, women change their hair color because its fun, it's
different, its a change. It has nothing to do with racial pride.
It's fun to try new looks, colors, styles whatever ethnic background.
Why do you imagine Latina women would not be proud of their genetic
beauty -- that's an assumption on your part. I'm American Indian and
I love playing with my hair color because I can. Get over it.
