Here are the bids so far. The auction ends on 20 February.
If you've never bid in a net auction before...don't be shy! If you
send me a bid, and then someone outbids you, I'll send you email to
give you a chance to bid again.
==========================================================================
Hi! Welcome to my latest net auction! I'm not a professional dealer, just
an avid collector. There's lots of unusual vinyl, CDs, cassettes, etc. in
this list, with music from every decade since the 1930s. So please page
down and see what I've got, then come back up here and read the Terms section
if you find something you want...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
TERMS
CONDITION: All vinyl listed here is near-mint, unless otherwise noted.
By "near-mint", I mean very close to being like new. (New records sometimes
have a tiny bit of surface noise in a spot or two.) I've determined this
by playing the records all the way through, not just by looking at them.
But in general, I haven't indicated the condition of album covers and
inner sleeves unless they're unusually good or bad. If you care about cover
wear, cutouts, promo stamps, or other characteristics besides the sound
quality of the record itself, I will gladly provide more detail upon request.
In general, assume that the cover is in very good condition, but not near-mint.
"played once" means I am the original owner, and I played it exactly once.
"shrink wrap" means it's still in shrink wrap, but it is not still sealed.
Except as noted, the CDs are scratch-free and all original inserts are
included.
BIDDING: Whole U.S. dollar amounts. Minimum increment $1.00. Please bid
on items individually -- no group bids or conditional bids.
I'll post a few updates to rec.music.marketplace, so if you want
to bid anonymously for some reason, please give me an alias.
I will respond individually to your bid and send you email if
someone outbids you later, so there's no need to monitor the
newsgroup for my updates.
PAYMENT: Check or money order in U.S. dollars.
POSTAGE: $1.50 for a single CD, cassette, or 7" single. Otherwise $3.00 total
(in the USA), no matter how many items you win. If you're outside
the USA, we'll arrange postage individually depending on whether
you want air mail or surface mail.
AUCTION ENDS on February 20 at 3pm Eastern Time (that's New York City time).
But any item that is still receiving bids won't be closed until
24 hours have passed without a new bid. I'll email updates to
all bidders, and also post a few updates to rec.music.marketplace.

COMPACT DISCS
-------------
Carlos, Wendy Beauty in the Beast out of print Audion Records
No insert or back page, just the CD in a plain jewel box, but I'll
put in a plain white back-and-spine page if you want one. Track #6
("Yusae-Aisae", the shortest one on the album) has a skip. Total
time 57:50, so I think this has track(s) not on the vinyl version.
MIN. BID: $7
Deep Purple The Book of Taliesyn
This is the version released on the Passport label in 1988,
with the cover art on the CD as well as the booklet. It was
mastered from a vinyl record, so the sound isn't spectacular,
and there are even a few crackles. But it still sounds better
than the more common cheapo version with blurry cover art
published by some other company.

Firesign Theatre Eat or Be Eaten W. Germany import 1985
A romp through an imaginary nightmarish computer "adventure"
game. But how many of FT's fans had even played an adventure
game in 1985? And how many of the youngsters who DID play
with computers in 1985 had ever heard of Firesign Theatre?
I'll bet this album didn't sell a whole lot of copies!

Not Drowning, Waving Follow the Geography 1993
Promo-only compilation of selections from six of their albums

the "Micronesian mix" of "Palau", different from the version
on _Claim_. Liner notes tell about the band and the tracks.
MIN. BID: $14
Scott, Raymond The Raymond Scott Project, Volume One: Powerhouse
I think this is out of print. Stash Records released this
a year before Columbia released their own collection of Scott's
1930s novelty-jazz recordings. Columbia's disc contains the
"official" releases, while this one has rehearsal takes and
live radio broadcast versions of many of the same tracks.
But this one also contains several tracks that aren't on the
Columbia collection at all. The sound quality is pretty noisy
on this disc -- I guess they didn't use all the fancy noise
reduction processes that Columbia used. (Magnetic tape hadn't
even been invented when these recordings were made!)
Several pages of liner notes and photos.

VINYL
-----
Condition: (See also the notes at the top of this file.)
All vinyl plays in near-mint condition except as noted.
"Scratchy" means the vinyl has been scratched, causing a "pop" sound
once per revolution.
"Crackle" is like the sound of bacon frying (but not quite so loud!).
Album cover condition usually is not noted, unless it is particularly
good or bad. Feel free to ask for more information about any item.

I think "Love Beat" is a non-album track. "Beat Box" seems
to be a shortened version of "Beat Box (Diversion One)" which
appears on their _Best of_ CD. The artist name is actually
shown as "Trevor Horn, Paul Morley, with the Art of Noise".

A low-fidelity amateur audience recording, but there's a DJ's

point. No date, but the show seems to have been in Los Angeles
early in their career, with a small but enthusiastic audience.

the inside cover in 1948. Included are "Phonetic Punctuation"

Borge", "Grieg Rhapsody", "Brahms Lullaby", "A Lesson in
Composition" (one broken side), and "The Blue Serenade" (the

Gleason, Jackie Lonesome Echo 1955, I think
TV star Jackie Gleason conducts an unusual orchestra in
(his own?) arrangements of chestnuts like "Deep Purple",
"Mad About the Boy", "The Thrill is Gone", etc. Prominent
instruments include mandolin, bass mandolin (domras), and
marimba. "The featured solo instrument throughout is the rare
oboe d'amour, whose melancholy tone is hauntingly displayed in
each of these favorite selections." But for me, the most
interesting thing is the Salvador Dali cover art, commissioned
just for this record. The back cover shows Dali and Gleason

Harrington, Bob two separate albums on his own recording label:
Ten Reasons Why Madalyn Murray O'Hair Must Be Stopped
Bob Harrington ("The Chaplain of Bourbon Street") fits every
stereotype of the annoying evangelist. The cover shows him
with his plastic-perfect hair, white suit, gold medallion,
and rhinestone boots, clutching a Bible as he confronts the
screaming, cowering O'Hair. Elsewhere on the cover is a
skull-and-crossbones, but with O'Hair's head in place of the
skull! This is a recording of a sermon in which, through
amazing feats of twisted logic, he "proves" not only that
O'Hair (an outspoken atheist) is our country's greatest threat
but also that she's a "demon-directed damsel", and besides,
she cusses a lot. But Bob can defeat her and her evil minions
if only you'll send him some money...
Vinyl very scratchy. Cover still in shrink wrap.
Satan Stripping the Saints
This one was recorded live at the Central Assembly of God
("Missouri's Fastest Growing Sunday School") in Joplin,
Missouri. He takes more cheap shots at Madalyn Murray O'Hair,
calling her a witch, a "hellish hussy", and a "mean old biddy".

"Now, for the FIRST TIME in the Western World since the pagan

competent 1960s rock, sometimes a bit weird. But the last
track is an unintentionally hilarious 10-minute, sitar-backed
chant in which the vocalist acts as the "High Priest of the
Psyche" and attempts to summon up "The Id" as if it were a

This band had a few brushes with dubious greatness. They sang the
theme song to "The Brady Bunch" TV show for its first season in 1969
(the Brady kids themselves sang it after that), and one of the members
sang the "Love American Style" theme music. But for this album, with
their Sgt.-Pepper-ish name and Sgt.-Pepper-ish outfits in the cover
photo, they were riding the psychedelic wave. Their music is pretty
standard late-60s stuff, with a little better lyrics than some bands'.
They had a minor hit with "Baby You Come Rollin' 'Cross My Mind".
Also, there are a couple of drum solos, and a 7-minute war protest
song. The vinyl is pretty noisy, but I think it was a noisy pressing
to begin with. The cover is still in shrink wrap, but has some wear

MIN. BID: $3
Perrey & Kingsley The In Sound From Way Out 1966 cover somewhat worn
In the mid-1960s, when synthesizers were confined to academia, some
highly-trained musicians were making some astonishingly silly music.
While Walter Carlos was using the Moog artistically, Perrey & Kingsley
were the absolute masters of early-synth kitsch! Your little kids
will adore this record (I did, and still do), but it was intended for
adults, and was supposed to "elevate" electronic music beyond the
avant-garde to the level of public acceptance. In fact, Kingsley did
later have a big mainstream hit with this kind of music: "Popcorn",
recorded under the name Hot Butter. But this is more primitive stuff,
and I defy you to listen to "Computer in Love" or "Barnyard in Orbit"
without being overwhelmed by the goofiness of it all! The vinyl has
one skip and a few slightly crackly places, but it's as good as any
other copy you're likely to find. Lots of liner notes. Mono.

album a cutout also made a triple-nick in the poster about
a millimeter long (barely noticeable).

Schoenbrun, David Who's Right in Vietnam? crackly probably mono
I'm no history buff -- should I know who David Schoenbrun is?
Anyway, this is his 1968 address to the Chicago Committee of
Business Executives Move for Vietnam Peace. He talks about his
meetings with Ho Chi Minh, and about Nixon, Truman and Johnson.
"Private recording...not for sale or commercial performance."
The cover is an accidental stereogram -- if you look at it in
the same way as those random-dot 3D posters, some of the drawn
soldiers look as if they're standing in front of the others.
MIN. BID: $5

Singing Nun, The same somewhat scratchy in places
Soeur Sourire, a French Dominican nun, recorded this album
of simple religious songs she wrote and sang in French.
"Dominique" was a big hit in the USA. Lyrics page is badly
torn but complete. A booklet tells Sourire's story, and a
packet contains four watercolor paintings by Sourire of
convent life. The gatefold cover is worn around the edges.

Spittin' Image their only two albums:
The Boy's a Dancer late 1970s?
Indie-label country-tinged rock with Linda Ronstadt-ish
vocals. But sometimes out of nowhere they hit you with some
cool 70s synth and studio effects. From Columbus, Ohio.
Spittin' Image 1982
Their major-label album, with a more mainstream look and
sound. Includes "Grandview Girls", which was understandably
a big local hit in Grandview, a suburb of Columbus. Someone
named Butch wrote his name in small letters on the front.

Stardrive Intergalactic Trot 1973 promo sticker Elektra
The cover notes claim band leader Robert Mason "has built the
world's first multi-voiced synthesizer that can be played like
a real keyboard instrument with full chords and tonal
clusters". Mason and his synth are shown in a photo. This
album came toward the end of the "Moog music" fad and toward
the beginning of jazz fusion, and it has elements of both.
There's the obligatory Beatles cover ("Strawberry Fields"),
and a fair amount of Moog boops-and-beeps throughout. But
there are also two very good 9-minute fusion tracks with the
full band, with Steve Gadd on drums.

Styx Serpent (also known as The Serpent is Rising) 1973
My favorite of their early albums. This is the 1980
re-release with better (IMHO) cover art. All the old Styx
albums suffer from mediocre sound quality, but the CD
version (now out of print) of this one isn't any better.

photo of someone, presumably Larry Fast. The front cover
has slight wear, and the back cover has a slight ring.

Tayshus, Austen "Australiana" b/w "Comedy Commando" 12" single, 45rpm
Two routines from an Australian stand-up comedian. "Australiana" is
a story told using puns on Australian culture and place names. It's
well-done, but you probably have to be Australian to get all of it.
And "Comedy Commando" is largely unintelligible to my American ears!
"Warning: This offensive contains language that might be a record."

Unknown artists Unknown Japanese title cover & vinyl near-mint
I can't read Japanese, and there's very little English on it.
It's a gatefold album, copyright 1968, Union Records, made by
Teichiku Records of Japan. It seems to be a Japanese version
of all those American 1960s easy-listening-arrangements
records, complete with the obligatory gratuitous pretty girl
on the cover. It's all instrumental, with most melodies played
by one Tadao Sawai on the koto, backed by Western instruments
(guitars, drums, orchestral instruments, etc.). I don't
recognize any of the music, but it's pleasant, and sounds
exotic to my American ears. Lots of Japanese liner notes.
MIN. BID: $6
Unknown artists Songs of Safety, Health, Friendship and Manners
The most agonizingly stupid children's record I've ever heard!
Among other atrocities, it contains a song encouraging kids
to accept foreign children as friends in spite of their
"funny names and funny faces" and to Americanize them by
introducing them to such wonders as ice cream. (What, they
don't have ice cream in Japan?) There's also a song warning
about the dangers of swimming after you eat. (Ooo, scary!)
Vinyl crackly, cover fair. 1962.

Warnke, Mike Jester in the King's Court 1977
He presents himself as a Christian stand-up comedian, and
in fact if you leave your IQ at the door, he does have his
funny moments. He also claims to be a reformed high priest of
Satan! In the second half of this performance/sermon, recorded
live in Florida, he gives a gleefully brutal description of
the crucifiction, even going so far as to make up gruesome
details about such things as the length of the spikes and the
methods of torture by which the soldiers turned Christ's flesh
into "hamburger". This guy is seriously disturbed.
