Gone Too Far

There's a wind from Russia
blowing over Alaska way.
Old man in the big house
won't have it any other way.

He say
"Dah dah dah,
they've gone too far..."

People are worried---
wondering where they'll hide.
Dark forces at work.
illuminating the night.

The ladies dance the Maypole
across the divide.
Banks are a'falling
while I stand in line.

He say
"Dah dah dah,
they've gone too far..."
People at the shelter---
they're working real hard.

Time waits for no man
but it stands stock still for me.
Dark forces at work
in levels of history.

Big bear come a'stomping
and he's coming for you.
He's on the phone with the Devil
and he wants what's due.

He say
"Dah dah dah,
they've gone too far..."
People are worried---
wondering where they'll hide.
Dark forces at work.
across the divide.

Fancy Tune, Will! Guitars could have been louder, but we could hear you
clear, maybe I just need headphones instead of just these tinny computer
speakers.

Okay, now you've Gone Too Far. No way is Will's Tune Fancy. In fact
it's AntiFancy. It's a simple Tune is what it is, and that's about
the only Good thing I can say about it. So don't diminish its
Goodness by calling it something it so obviously isn't, like Fancy.

Oh yeah, and Will's vocals should loom ominously in the background,
shadowing the music and melody, rather than standing clearly up front
where it clearly sounds out of place.

Thanks for taking the time for a listen, VV.

Part of the sound problems are very likely due to Reverb Nation
forcing the Mp3s to be compressed to the very smallest size for the

first-take & almost no mixing yet.

Will has some interesting ideas even if their expression is often
inarticulate. He holds the love and respect of his fellow performers,
commodities that are often under estimated but never over valued. His
recorded material is less than impressive, but his live performance
was a thoroughly enjoyable, memorable music experience for me. On a
personal level I know Will to be conscious of and attendant to family
and community responsibilities. I like him. I think he's a good
person trying to be a better person.

I understood your tone and intent perfectly. I don't think either
Will or Chuck have quite become their respective Usenet
personalities. I think they are both far better men than they are
capable of representing in text. By comparison, I think much the same
of you, Fred. You're probably an even better man than I think you
are, and from what little I know I already think you're pretty
awesome. Sixteen grand kids? OMG. How do you have time to spend
online that you do? I know the toll it takes on me, and my rug rat
doesn't have his own rug rats yet.

Oops, I meant LOL!

Look at the gaps in my posting history, and you should be able to spot the
points in time where the grandchildren were born, the points where the moms and
dads required my assistance, and the points where I became The Stern Counselor
to both.

Grandkids are easy. You can always send them home to mom and dad

Yes, at this point I've come to accept "Autograph of Zorro" for the
minor classic that it is... so, for the first time of the new year, we
present:

Zorro recorded at SoHo 2005 for the Shadowville-Netherlands cross
cultural exchange project:

"In my opinion Will Dockery is easily one of the most authentic
American poets around. A real coffeehouse poet who is not scared of
mingling some real American elements such as country music into his
poetry." -M.H.Benders

A little self deprecation would do your writing a world of good. You
don't appear capable of introspection, but I know you're not as
arrogant as you read.

Great music and lyrics. The only quibbles I had are:

The storyline sounded (to me) like the 1950s or 1960s, back when we
had to hide under our desks from the Soviet missiles. Is that
intentional?

I'd write the second line of the chorus, "Da, da, da," thw way the
Russsian is normally spelled in English.

Your voice is very cheerful, like your lighter songs (Little Homeless
Clown, Truckstop Woman, etc.), where I'd expect you to come on like
the voice of doom here. I'm not asking you to re-record the vocals
(yet, anyway), just play with that idea in live performances and
such.

BTW, I think I mentioned I bought Cohen's "The Future." Maureen walked
into my den the other day when I had it on, and asked, "Dockery?". I
hadn't noticed, but his voice on that does sound a lot like yours on
"Red Lipped Stranger."

While some of that is in the performance, a lot can be fixed on the
mixing board, where Jack Snipe has them now, working on final mises.
As I put it earlier to VV:

I didn't really mean to suggest a problem that needed fixing. If one
thinks of Will Dockery and the Shadowville Allstars as a vehicle then
you are definitely the drive wheel. I see you as seeing yourself in a
fancy new front wheel drive vehicle when your talents and style appear
better suited for a more classic rear wheel drive ragtop. Your voice
is distinctive but not outstanding. You hear better than you sound.
Your voice adds character and texture to the piece when it supports
rather than leads the instrumentation.

Time shelters no man.
Dark forces are coming

The phone rings. It's the Devil.
He has a few questions.

Unfortunately, if you read the papers, it is quite current here in
America...

No doubt this one will be getting a lot of live play in 2012, so
that'll likely happen quite naturally.

Wow, of course that's quite an honor to be mistaken for Leonard Cohen!

Tell Maureen I appreciate that!

Coming back to this since you're not the only one who has stated
similarly... about the vocals. As I responded another person about the
"light" vocals on "Gone Too Far":

"...And I can try another track on the vocals, but I like that element of
surprise for those who are expecting the same old 'Dockery Growl''..."

So, I'm kind of leaning to it as-is.

Well, it isn't any secret that I stayed drunk for several years around that
time period, and finally gave up the effort when I became convinced that the
booze, drugs and hookers scene wasn't all that the Bukowski/Kerouac myths
made them out to be.

Four years now without a drop, as you've no doubt also heard, right Fred?

That's right, you mentioned having some songs recorded with a group from the
1980s, in another thread yesterday, Fred... I haven't have time to
Scroll/Delve on those yet, but are they online in any form that you know of?

Were you involved at all with Nashville's small new wave/punk scene
back in 1980-82 or so?

I had some friends in a "country punk" band who were based in
Nashville, who made a couple of appearances in Atlanta in one of the
smaller venues (off the 688 circuit by a block or two) in the Midtown
stretch (all completely demolished 20+ years ago and built over with
shiny new buildings), a little dive that changed names about once a
week, TV Dinner, Torn Curtain, Tokyo Beach, & cet that was a great
haunt for disgruntled outlaws, gay rednecks, new wave sluts, poet
rocker wannabes and local celebs drifting in such as Chicago Bob,
Bruce Hampton, Tinsley Ellis.

Drawing a blank on the Nashville folks right now, the singer was a
sort of combination of Joan Jett & June Cater, pretty phenomenal for
the time & place, she was... Tina, I think it was? I have it written
down in 30 year old notebooks of poems & lyric jottings.

Definitely a lot to scroll/delve into, and I could easily get caught
up in Stonwall Jackson's work for a long while... when "time permits"
I'll definitely have a look-see on what I can turn up in the archives
on these details.

If you don't mind me asking, were you working under the name "Fred
Hall" back then?

I'll take a minute to look up "Elm Street", for starters, a lot of
interesting history here, thanks for sharing, man!

I found a page for Johnnie Helm, which mentions Elm Street briefly:

http://www.jvillejohnnie.com/

"...Johnnie remained in East Texas and pursued music only on a
secondary basis. He began to spend more time writing and recording his
songs and helping other people do the same through a demo studio he
and Tommie built in 1983. He recorded a solo project in 1987 as
Johnnie Helm and the Elm Street Band. This was basically an electric
project completed with the rhythm players from the studio."

I hope with a bit more delving I can locate more info, Google Search
seems to be that way, once a keyword(s) is entered, it seems to begin
picking up more and more over time... interesting history so far!

Not turning up much else on Elm Street Band (at least two other bands
are using the name, obviously no relation though) so far, but I bet
Johnnie Helm and/or his people might be inspired to post some sample
tracks fairly easily...

The Stonewall Jackson tracks will possibly be the easiest to track
down, my friends in the Bibb City Ramblers cover a couple of his tunes
in their current set.

Besides "Freeway Man", what are the names of other tracks Stonewall
Jackson recorded?

Be careful... tape can be so fragile, and at 25 years it most likely
is passed it's prime decades ago...

Look forward to hearing it, though, if possible!

Yes, I'm very sorry about that, =z=... I also owe George Dance a copy,
as well as a couple of chicks I promised to send one to.

And here I am almost ready to release the follow-up... I'll have to
bite the bullet, package up about four copies, one for you, George and
the two lovely ladies, get to the Post Office before 5pm and wait in
line to have them weighed and stamped, then off to y'all.

Once upon a time there were scales and postage machines available 24-7
in the Post Office lobby, but that was changed long ago... vandals or
something, I don't know.

But that will be my 2012 pledge, my resolution, to get all these
mailed! Previous pledges/resolutions to stop drinking & smoking worked
well, so I should be able to knock this simple task out straightaway,
right..?

If you actually hurried your ass rather than stopping long enough to
make an exaggerated point about how you were going to 'make haste' how
much faster do you think you'd be and how much more would you be able
to get done? Speaking of which, how many half hour jogs have you done
since we last discussed your running around the block? See what I mean
Will? You know where that path leads Will? The one with all your good
intentions on it? One Guess. Now get off your dumb ass and do
something about it. No excuses. Start now.

Every night for almost a year now (with a 5 pound weight Brian Mallard
gave me for X-Mas, which seems to help just a bit, as well), and
before that I was walking around the park, the Riverwalk, et cetera. I
just didn't think it was worth announcing here, for this very reason.
As I wrote, my efforts in keeping my blood pumping may not rival you
or Mick Jagger, but I can feel the results, although visually the
results are not coming as fast as I'd like them to.

Any other questions while I'm in the mood to answer?

Almost a decade since "The Autograph of Zorro", and not only is that
bona-fide classic remembered here, but an old friend brought it up at

Amsterdam where supposedly only Dutch citizens can smoke weed, hash
all that in the cafes over there.

Anyway, here, for you, Fred, Usenet and the groovy people at Del

I will need that new address, for sure... meanwhile, here is a

Yes, from what I can tell, or should say, *that* is George Dance's
copy of "Shadowville Speedway" sitting there across the room from me,
but I should almost as easily be able to get one packaged and in the

...Right?

Hey, I'm house-sitting for a friend over here in Phenix City tonight,
and just found a container of "Hemp Dream" a hemp drink, which I have
no idea if it's any good or not, or good for what, just interested
that it slightly relates to your post... "A high quality hemp drink
made with all natural hemp seeds..."

Okay, here it is:

http://www.tastethedream.com/products/category/428.php

"HEMP DREAM non-dairy beverage is derived from the Hemp seed, which
contains high quality protein and amino acids in addition to EFA’s

Yeah, I'm thinking it must have not been so good since he left town
without drinking it... thinking of popping it open for a try now, but
the coffee always wins out as my first choice in beverages, esp. on a
chilly damp evening like tonight.

veterans as exhibit technicians and provides tradeshow exhibit labor

target segments of the market that are government agencies and private
companies who exhibit to government agencies at tradeshows to
establish and sustain a significant industry profile. BeauseantWorks
recruits instructional staff through cooperative referral from local
Union members and enlists new hire employees through the Transitional

operation of the Hieronymous707 eloptical device, and by providing
labor services to support, sustain, and grow the company. 501c3

support an otherwise self-sufficient training and employment program
for veterans."

Another published poem... and paid for, too.

"I know that my true friend will appear after my death, and my
sweetheart died before I was born." -Tanaka Katsumi

"He's not gone as long as we... remember." -Dr. Leonard McCoy

*** World AIDs Day Concert a success ***

The World AIDS Day Concert 2012 starring Will Dockery & The
Shadowville All-Stars with musical guests Veronica Coldiron, Mike
Matthews, Dana Dodd & Bobby Walden at Fountain City Coffee, 1007
Broadway, Downtown Columbus. was a success, raising some bucks for the
cause with our annual sidewalk show.

https://www.facebook.com/events/207045492762887 -

On behalf of The Shadowville All-Stars I'd like to thank Alex Jordan,
Mike Matthews, Jeremy Scott Hobbs, Veronica Coldiron, Gary Frankfurth,
Jack Snipe, Ryan Griffis, Dana Dodd, Rusty Wood, Eric M. Gunter,
Shannon Jackson-Summers and Brian Mallard and the illustrious staff of
baristas Fountain City Coffee for helping me put this shindig on.

*** Some random poetry thoughts on a Winter day ***

One aspect of a good poem, I think, and am tossing to my team of most
excellent teachers here on the newsgroup, is to find a connection in
the poem being read, and one's own life. Agree?
Example: In the Frost poem where he's a kid chopping woods and the two
hobo fellers [or something like that, it's been a couple of years since
I read it or thought of it] come out of the woods and, IIRC, threaten
young Frost, struck a chord with "Real life" to me:

Dark Queen read Frost avidly, and "forced" me to read this one... in
the era when we spent a couple of bitterly cold winter months in an old
house with no power whatsoever, not even running water. [please don't
flame me, we took showers at her mother's house!]

There was a big old fireplace in the den, and we used candles and oil
lamps... very 17th Century, very romantic--- for a few days.

Now, Shadowville winters are usually very mild, New Yorkers and other
assorted Yankees I've known compare most winter days here to early fall
oreven a late summer night. As God and his friends would have it,
though, cold set in big time, freezing, even the rarest of products
here: snow.

Anyhow, to get to the point, we went through firewood *very* fast
through the long cold nights... I was constantly scavaging for burnable
wood, and chopping, chopping... I learned more than I ever cared to
about chopping firewood.

And Dark Queen read the Frost poem to me by candle light, in that soft
slow Susan Saranden [sp?] drawl that worked so well at poetry readings.

Several years later, the poem stays with me, and I *do* want to read
more Robert Frost.

Question: What is *your* favorite Frost poem, and why? Any that remind
you of a real life memory?

Thanks, pals.

Found this one in the Drafts section, so a belated thanks for listening and
the kind comments.

As I wrote a British friend trying to describe The Buck Wild Salooni less
than a minute ago:
Just visited the new country music Valhalla last night, the new Buck Wild
Saloon by our friend the local country music legend David McBride, withThe
Shadowville All-Stars Mallard and Robbie, my guitarist and new bass player.
The place is about ten miles out of town, a warehouse converted to a big
roadhouse... about halfway to Auburn, location is great to catch audience
from our direction and the college crowd. Lonnie Marshall Smith & Kenny
Lewis Band were playing, their set loaded with country rock flourish on
their usual 1990s style "alternative mainstream" sound, hilarious, but
worked/. Big crowd for a Thursday... I told Mallard and Robbie okay, we
break out the hats and twang, and Country-western Jack Snipe up like he used
to be, and try to get booked here... and was only half joking!

a.. Wildman Steve My question: mainstream country?? That's what I'm
grokking... worried about BMI/ASCAP royalties? Hire ORIGINAL bands that play
GOOD DANCEABLE COUNTRY MUSIC. Does that seem out of the realm of awesome, or
am I delusional??

b.. Wildman Steve Probably delusional. I suppose I'm an idealist....

delusional, but at least I'm not the only one..."
