HI

Some of you guys ( and gal ) e-mailed me off line about what kind of
playing
Walt Johnson does. Well, he certainly does more than make cases. He
has many credits but the 2 that stand out the most are he was Elvis's
lead trumpet player after Pat Houston died , I think he was only 20
years old, and took over as Sinatra's lead player ( West Coast ) after
Charlie Turner left. He also has been a succesful studio player in LA
for the last 25 years.

Try Kanstul.com and go to the " contact " section to get ahold of Jim
New about the dupe of Walts piece. BTW, I have no financial interest
in any of this, just think it interesting technology

You can also see some clips of Walt on trumpetstuff.com The guy is a total
animal. My buddy and I waited off and on in the Nugget parking lot for 2
weeks every night till we found him. He gave us a tape of some of his
playing. Scary stuff man.

There is a Chase CD called "Watch Closely Now" which is made up of Chase alumni
with Walt Johnson playing the Bill Chase parts on charts that Chase never had
an opportunity to record, some of which are a bit better than others.

The featured parts played by Johnson are as fine as those played by Chase
himself, at least in my opinion.

I had the pleasure of playing with him with Frank Sinatra Jr and the
Virtual Elvis touring show. Not only is he one of the best lead
players on the planet but a great human being. Playing next to him
was a honor.

I did a casual big band gig with him like 10 years ago. Super player. I
can't forget glancing over at his part on a tune and seeing a high d (2nd
ledger line) fat quarter note with 8 va written over it. Of course he
nailed it. It made me feel quite inadequate.

Just listened to the chase CD titled Watch Closely Now. the charts aren't very
good, but Johnson is a monster lead player.

I was luckly enough to see Walt in one of his first LA gigs - had to
be 1979 or 1980. A group of us from High School used to go see Belson
and other bands whenever we could. Louie's band was playing farily
often at the Marina Bistro. We also had a recently graduated friend
from our school (Matt Catingub) who was playing 2nd Alto with Louie,
so it was really a thrill to see one of "us" playing with this kind of
band.

Anyway, we get there, and noticed immediately the the lead spot was
not occupied by Bobby Shew. (This was about the time that Bobby was
just starting his own quintet). There was this unknown person
occupying the lead spot, and no discernable scream player in the 5th
chair. We were more than a little disappointed.

Louie kicked off the first set with Intimacy of the Blues, and Walt
played both the lead and scream parts!! Simply amazing. He didn't
quite have the swing and dynamics of Bobby Shew, but he had MONSTER
chops. He started out strong with that first chart, and didn't let up
all night. He did lead and scream parts for all 3 sets. At least one
of us usually snuck a small tape recorder into these gigs, but I've
not ever heard a tape from this one.

Whenever I saw Louie after that he had Walt occupy the 5th chair for
scream parts. He also played 5th chair for most of the Buddy Rich gigs
I saw in the early 80s.
