I have played guitar for 7 years and I am disatisfied with my ablility
to play by ear . I was considering learning trumpet as because it has
only 3 valves , it would force me to rely far more on my own ability to
distinguish between pitches , and thus improve my ear . I also
like the sound of brass instruments , so I thought it would be a
nice accompaniment to my guitar .However , I have heard trumpet is very
difficult . Is this true ?

Physically, trumpet is the most difficult of instruments. It may be easy
to start if you have the right lips and teeth but most people don't.
Stick with it using good form and you will find it the most rewarding of
instruments.

BTW, in your view, what are the "right" kind of lips and teeth?

I suppose you have never tried to play the violin. THAT, I think, is the
hardest of all instruments; to master, at least. I am a die hard trumpet
player, but I must admit, the violin is the toughest.

Thats not to say the trumpet doesnt take more balls : )

Yes and no. It's not hard to make a sound and to blow notes, but it's
hard to make music, and I really wouldn't expect anything too fast.
(i'm not knocking your musical ability...just past experiences) As far
as playing by ear is concerned I'm not really sure the valves make a
difference.

It is hard to play ANY instrument well. Trumpet is no harder than many
others (except maybe to some trumpet player).

I agree, but...

As a multi-instrumentalist, who has specialized on several different
instruments over the years, the hardest one for _ME_ is still my first
love...the trumpet.

I now play about 90% jazz guitar and 10% trumpet. Guitar (to play well)
has its own challenges, but they don't begin to compare to the
trumpet's.

I think that what makes it difficult is the mindset of the player. If
you think that trumpet is the hardest, then it will be the hardest for
you. I picked the trumpet originally for its relatively compact size,
but primarily because it looked easier to manage three valves than
umpteen different keys.

As for physical demands, I would not say that the trumpet is the
toughest. Double reed players have a tiny opening to play through,
which can close up at any time. Keyboards, to my mind, are also more
demanding because you have to think in chords.

IMHO, the most physically demanding instrument of all is the bagpipes,
and I'm not saying this because my grandmother was born and rised in
Scotland. Think about the instrument for a moment. Sound is produced
by pumping air out of the bag through the three drones and the chanter.
While four columns of air are going out, you have one place to put the
air back in through, and it is relativelty small in diameter. I also
wish to mention that one of my grandmother's brothers was told by his
physician that he had to give up playing because it was too rough on his
heart. Mind you, he was not that old at the time.

At any rate, that's my 2 cents on the subject of toughest instrument.
See you around the newsgroup!

Well, how hard is it?
Herb Alpert -- the lead trumpeter who led The Tijuana Brass to huge
success -- outselling the Beatles in the mid-1960s, in fact -- "lost
his lip" for a period in the early-70s.
He literally had to seek the services of a trumpet teacher again.
This is a successful PRO musician who had to "relearn" the instrument.

Trumpet players (actually all brass players) must produce the sound with
their lips, tongue and air. The trumpet is merely an amplifier.

For most other instruments the sound is generated via 3rd party non-flesh
sound sources such as vibrating strings and reeds.

Perhaps one can argue that brass instruments in general are tougher since
there is less outside man-made assistance in producing sound.

Cheers,

Ed
