I was just wondering if anybody had any info on any adverse
health effects of valve oil...breathing it or ingesting it.
Thanks a lot,

Ingesting: not a good idea. Valve oils, for the most part, are
petrolium products. The synthetics are likely worse. That is why they
almost all say: "Harmful if swallowed. Keep away from children."
Space Filler I believe is not toxic, however. But why take a chance?
Inhailing: not a good idea if your a *purposefully* doing so.
"Second-hand" valve oil fumes are likely ok. Most modern valve oils (as
opposed to the home made varieties using lamp oil) have lower vapor
pressures and don't give off much in the way of fumes.
You might try calling the valve oil makers and ask them. Also, try a
poison control center in your area. If you can tell them what is in it
(again, check with the mfgs - they might be willing to describe at
least generically what is in the oil), they can tell you what the
effects might be.

I always thought that was a comment on my playing!

Don't worry, I wasn't planning to drink valve oil, or breathe it, or even
cook with it. My original question was pertaining to any possible harm
that could occur from accidentally inhaling small amounts during normal
playing.
I also wonder if anybody has tried any non-toxic
alternatives to petroleum based valve oils.
I've been using UltraPure oil for the last 6 or 7 years. It's great
stuff. Besides being non-toxic, it has the very nice quality of not
evaporating (after all, it's not petroleum-based). Highly recommended.
(BTW, UltraPure comes out of Corvallis, Oregon. Call (503) 754-6135
for more information. That's the phone number on the bottle I have.)
