I recently received a 4 valve picollo trumpet as a gift and have no idea
where to start with fingerings.
Does anyone have a fingering chart available?
Thanks
Fourth can also be used in other situations to improve fingerings or to
adjust intonation. Thus, D can be fingered just 4 and the C# is 4 plus 2,
making for an easier trill.
A good way to tune the fourth valve slide is to play D with 1 and 3 then
play it with just the fourth valve and pull the slide until it is in tune.
Depending on your horn, mouthpiece and technique, you may find that the
lowest notes are very sharp. You might end up fingering E below the staff
4 plus 2 and 3 instead of 4 plus 1 and 2.
With a four valve, piston instrument, built with the valve in a straight
line, I hold the horn so as to operate the fourth valve with the first
finger on my left hand -- the sinistral forefinger quite a bit more
dexterous than the dextral pinky.

How do you get to receive gifts like that?

First off, I too would like to know how you receive a gift like this.
That aside, there is an excellent Method for Piccolo Trumpet by Gerald
Webster. It's published by The Brass Press. This book contains a
whole array of very useful information including fingerings,
intonation exercises, warm-ups, etc. . .
Another book is Hickman's Big Piccolo Trumpet book. This book also
contains some useful information (namely the section on "tricks"), but
doesn't compare to Webster's book as far as practical information
about actually learning HOW to play the instrument is concerned.
For me, the piccolo has always been like a high-maintenance
girlfriend/bitch. When she's happy, things are great. BUT, you
really have to WORK to keep her happy, and you can bet that she'll
call you out when you've been neglecting her.
Have fun.

In regards to the gift...the horn (Getzen Eterna) was given to me by a dear
friend of our family who due to health reasons is no longer able to play.
