Freddie is lost his lips man...
And sounded awful...
It was sad I even saw Freddie cry on stage as he was struggling on
What is this thing called love. Then was helped off stage with tears
running down his face.
I would like to remenber Freddie as one hell of trumpeter when he played
on LPs like Free For all, Ready for Freedie, Red Clay his post bop style
was wicked...
Errol Thomas.
Yeah, I saw him two nights before, and can only agree. Tragic. I
wanted to go up to him, buy him a drink, and tell him that he would
always be one of the greats. But I didn't.

"Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof"
No, I'm afraid that Freddie's problems are more than just a bad night
:( He blew his chops out, and talked about it in Downbead sometime
over the summer. He stresed the necessity of warming up, and is
working hard to regain his chops. I am optimistic that we will hear
more from Freddie. I hope so, we need him.

"He blew his chops out"? What the heck is THAT supposed to mean?
Unless you can point to some actual physical strain or other physical
trauma to Mr. Hubbard's lips, it seems you're talking about a
"non-event."
What is much more likely to have happened is that Hubbard developed
some kind of mind-based -- as oposed to physical -- problem which has
effected his playing; IOW, "it's all psychological," very likely.
Herb Alpert also supposedly "lost his lip" about 1970 or so -- after
leading the most commercially-successful brass band in the world, The
Tijuana Brass, for several years -- and later "re-discovered" his
technique.
Could it be that Hubbard just needed a vacation from playing?

His problems began in late 1992. While in Europe with Slide Hamton's
band, he was palying high notes with Jon Faddis and "got carried away."
He then flew to Philly and started playing at a gig without warming
up."That's when my top lip popped," Hubbard said.By saying "popped" he
meant that he split his lip open.He continued to play on itfor some
time, trying to over come it without having to quit. It then got
infected.
He had to stop playing for "a while." He then started over with the
basics and consulted several classical trumpet players. As the recent
reports of Freddie's less-than-stellar performances have shown, he still
must be trying to get back in shape.
