I saw a pic of Jon Faddis with this big, open-mouthed grin and it
looked like there was an enormous v-shaped gap between his front teeth
big enough to stick your pinky through. Was this some kind of gag
photo or is that the way his teeth are?

I knew a kid in h.s. who had a chip on one of his front incisors who
had a strong double G by the time he was a sophmore, which he lost
when he had his tooth fixed.

Heck yeah, Faddis has big buck teeth. Many high range guys have some
kind of gap between their front teeth. Teeth are definately part of the
ball game.

His teeth are like a picket fence. Pretty much the way they are. Amazing
what he can do tho eh?

I should ask him..but I heard a rumor that he actually filed them down with a
nail file like device, to strenthen his upper register playing.

Don't know about the truth to that.

Actually, that's exactly what it looked like. This didn't look like
any kind of natural tooth formation that I've ever seen. I wondered if
he'd had something done to them.

I went to high school in the same school district as Jon back in the
SF Bay Area. He had the big gap in his teeth, I remember it well. At
one point he went to a dentist to have it fixed, I guess the repair
affected his range so profoundly, he had it undone! That was the story
I had heard, anyways. He was an amazing player, we were in district
honor band a few times, I always had the misfortune of being seated
ahead of him because of sightreading ability, I had it and he didn't.
Most embarrasing, though. He could play octaves over me at volume
levels that were inhuman.

I met Jon in 1969 when he was in school in Oakland and I got to know
him quite well. He had the chip out of his front teeth then and he
already played like a house afire. A little rough right then, but at
14 or 15, what the hey? It's true, he had his teeth fixed and
immediately unfixed. I take the strongest exception to somebody's
comment about 'big buck teeth' or something like that. Jon's teeth
were then and are now just fine. As for anyone thinking he filed his
teeth, that's really absurd. All he did was work very hard to learn
play trumpet. Doing pretty well, isn't he?

I want to second what Bill said. I took from the same trumpet teacher
that jon did, a guy named Billy Catalano and would see jon all the
time at lessons. He had the same teeth formation as he does now and
"boy" could he play hi. I also heard the story of Jon fixing the gap
by a dentist ( told to me by another one of Jon's teachers, Johnny
Capolla , a San Francisco legend )and how he had to undo the repair to
even get out of the staff.

By the way, Bill Atwood , is himself a hell of a player in that neck
of the woods playing with some of the top " Rock and Roll " acts
around.

Why, thank you kindly sir. I left the bay area in 1976 due to
allergies to all the drugs I was doing (who didn't). I'm in Fort
Worth now and loving it - just a little freelancing and the (very)
occasional jazz gig.

You know, in my earlier post I almost said about Jon 'I love the guy'
but really we're just friends (of long ago). I'm glad you mention
John Copolla and Billy Catalano. Haven't seen Billy in a very long
time, but I see John when I go out to SFO to visit. You know John
had an old Martin 3 that Maynard gave him in the 50s and John played
the crap out of that thing until it had patches on the patches and it
was coming apart. I sure like reading these threads.

Best to all,
Bill Atwood
