Does anyone know what Chuck Mangione has been doing? I gather he's
still alive and perfoming occasionally, but I haven't seen a new
recording from him in several years. Is he all right?

Last I heard, he was in Rochester, staggering around the halls of Eastman,
with a dazed look on his face. Tragic.

This Monday morning, the SF Bay Area local news show Mornings on 2
had him as a guest. The local man-about-town interviewed him in front
of some cafe, and then he played, you guessed it, Feels So Good.
I gather that his band is playing at Kimball's East this week.
Chuck is playing at the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, NY on the 24th of
March...I hope I can get tickets!!!

Mangione recently made a guest appearance on "King of the Hill" - a
new cartoon series on the Fox network.
Chuck is playing this Wednesday amd Thursday at "The Little Theatre" in
downtown Rochester, New York with his brother Gap on piano and other
musicians. I heard him play trumpet on the radio last week - it wasn't very
good. He is definitely better on flugelhorn. He is over 60, now, I believe.
Is it really tragic? ...maybe he's dazed because people are still
buying copies of "Feels So Good."
But realistically did you ever expect ole Chuck to be another Art
Farmer? I didn't think so...

I heard it was substance abuse/alcohol. I heard this from a student at
Eastman...I hope it's not true.

I don't follow you...
Well, last I heard, he was playing the Blue Note in NYC with Gerry
Niewood on reeds and a phenomenal young guitarist. I wasn't a big fan
of the drummer (too rock 'n roll and a technique freak), but Chuck
played great. This would have been autumn 1995. They played some of
the popular favorites and also hit a great obscure Dizzy tune and
Manha De Carnaval. Nothing to be ashamed of. I'd go again in a minute.

For those so inclined, he's returning for several concerts over a weekend
in late March or early April at the College of San Mateo here in the San
Francisco Bay Area. Contact or listen to KCSM-FM (91.1) for information.
