LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell, the television evangelist who
founded the Moral Majority and used it to mold the religious right
into a political force, died Tuesday shortly after being found
unconscious in his office at Liberty University, a school executive
said. He was 73.
Ron Godwin, the university's executive vice president, said Falwell,
73, was found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and taken to Lynchburg
General Hospital. "CPR efforts were unsuccessful," he said.
Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but he said
Falwell "has a history of heart challenges."
"I had breakfast with him, and he was fine at breakfast," Godwin said.
"He went to his office, I went to mine, and they found him
unresponsive."
Falwell had survived two serious health scares in early 2005. He was
hospitalized for two weeks with what was described as a viral
infection, then was hospitalized again a few weeks later after going
into respiratory arrest. Later that year, doctors found a 70 percent
blockage in an artery, which they opened with stents.
Falwell credited his Moral Majority with getting millions of
conservative voters registered, electing Ronald Reagan and
giving Republicans Senate control in 1980.
"I shudder to think where the country would be right now if the
religious right had not evolved," Falwell said when he stepped down as
Moral Majority president in 1987.
The fundamentalist church that Falwell started in an abandoned
bottling plant in 1956 grew into a religious empire that includes the
22,000-member Thomas Road Baptist Church, the "Old Time Gospel Hour"
carried on television stations around the country and 7,700-student
Liberty University. He built Christian elementary schools, homes for
unwed mothers and a home for alcoholics.
He also founded Liberty University in Lynchburg, which began as
Lynchburg Baptist College in 1971.
Liberty University's commencement is scheduled for Saturday, with
former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich as the featured speaker.
In 2006, Falwell marked the 50th anniversary of his church and spoke
out on stem cell research, saying he sympathized with people with
medical problems, but that any medical research must pass a three-part
test: "Is it ethically correct? Is it biblically correct? Is it
morally correct?"
Falwell had once opposed mixing preaching with politics, but he
changed his view and in 1979, founded the Moral Majority. The
political lobbying organization grew to 6.5 million members and raised
$69 million as it supported conservative politicians and campaigned
against abortion, homosexuality, pornography and bans on school
prayer.
Falwell became the face of the religious right, appearing on national
magazine covers and on television talk shows. In 1983, U.S. News &
World Report named him one of 25 most influential people in America.
In 1984, he sued Hustler magazine for $45 million, charging that he
was libeled by an ad parody depicting him as an incestuous drunkard. A
federal jury found the fake ad did not libel him, but awarded him
$200,000 for emotional distress. That verdict was overturned, however,
in a landmark 1988 U.S. Supreme Court decision that held that
even pornographic spoofs about a public figure enjoy First Amendment
protection.
The case was depicted in the 1996 movie "The People v. Larry Flynt."
With Falwell's high profile came frequent criticism, even from fellow
ministers. The Rev. Billy Graham once rebuked him for political
sermonizing on "non-moral issues."
Falwell quit the Moral Majority in 1987, saying he was tired of being
"a lightning rod" and wanted to devote his time to his ministry and
Liberty University. But he remained outspoken and continued to draw
criticism for his remarks.
Days after Sept. 11, 2001, Falwell essentially blamed feminists, gays,
lesbians and liberal groups for bringing on the terrorist attacks. He
later apologized.
In 1999, he told an evangelical conference that the Antichrist was a
male Jew who was probably already alive. Falwell later apologized for
the remark but not for holding the belief. A month later, his National
Liberty Journal warned parents that Tinky Winky, a purple, purse-
toting character on television's "Teletubbies" show, was a gay role
model and morally damaging to children.
Falwell was re-energized after family values proved important in the
2004 presidential election. He formed the Faith and Values Coalition
as the "21st Century resurrection of the Moral Majority," to seek anti-
abortion judges, a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage
and more conservative elected officials.
The big, blue-eyed preacher with a booming voice started his
independent Baptist church with 35 members. From his living room, he
began broadcasting his message of salvation and raising the donations
that helped his ministry grow.
"He was one of the first to come up with ways to use television to
expand his ministry," said Robert Alley, a retired University of
Richmond religion professor who studied and criticized Falwell's
career.
In 1987, Falwell took over the PTL (Praise the Lord) ministry in South
Carolina after Jim Bakker's troubles. Falwell slid fully clothed down
a theme park water slide after donors met his fund-raising goal to
help rescue the rival ministry. He gave it up seven months later after
learning the depth of PTL's financial problems.
Largely because of the Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart scandals, donations
to Falwell's ministry dropped from $135 million in 1986 to less than
$100 million the following year. Hundreds of workers were laid off and
viewers of his television show dwindled.
Liberty University was $73 million in debt and on the verge of
bankruptcy, and his "Old Time Gospel Hour" was $16 million in debt.
By the mid-1990s, two local businessmen with long ties to Falwell
began overseeing the finances and helped get companies to forgive
debts or write them of as losses.
Falwell devoted much of his time keeping his university afloat. He
dreamed that Liberty would grow to 50,000 students and be to
fundamentalist Christians what Notre Dame is to Roman Catholics and
Brigham Young University is to Mormons. He was an avid sports fan who
arrived at Liberty basketball games to the cheers of students.
Falwell's father and his grandfather were militant atheists, he wrote
in his autobiography. He said his father made a fortune off his
businesses - including bootleging during Prohibition.
As a student, Falwell was a star athlete and a prankster who was
barred from giving his high school valedictorian's speech after he was
caught using counterfeit lunch tickets his senior year.
He ran with a gang of juvenile delinquents before becoming a born-
again Christian at age 19. He turned down an offer to play
professional baseball and transferred from Lynchburg College to
Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mo.
"My heart was burning to serve Christ," he once said in an interview.
"I knew nothing would ever be the same again."
Falwell is survived by his wife, Macel, and three children, Jerry,

Pastor. Our prayers go out to Macel and her family. Were you to know
Macel like so many of us do, you would pray that God will help her and
her family thru this.Jerry put his faith and trust in the Lord Jesus
Christ, Jerry repented of his sins and confessed the Lord Jesus
Christ, Jerry Falwell is now in heaven, not because of his good works,
but because he trusted in what Jesus did on the cross to redeem his
sins.
I was blessed to have went to Seminary with Jonathan, and I took a few
classes where I actually sat in the very next desk next to him.
Jonathan is a good man and like his father he has a Pastors heart.
Jonathan can be trusted. With Jonathan, Dr. Elmer Towns and many
others, Jerry leaves Thomas Road Church in very good hands. A friend
of mine named Ed Nadolny from BUA once dated Jeanie (When Ed attended
LU)for a short time.
For those of us who knew Dr. Falwell personally , he always put his
family before his church, and he always put his church before his
public personality. Dr Falwell was a very good local pastor who showed
God's love to his church, he cared for every church member at Thomas
Road like they were all members of his family.
Jerry, was not perfect. Many times he made decisions that I did not
agree with, but no matter how Jerry administered I always loved and
respected him. Overall the real Jerry was a faithful moral man who
cared about people. Jerry was from the old school hard shell
Independent Baptist way of thinking, but over the years he became more
progressive, more mainstream evangelical , what the hard shells would
call 'liberal". Jerry never once compromised on his stand on the word
of God.
Jerry as a friend was a prankster, and he was always playing practical
jokes on everyone all of the time . He got the biggest kick out of
sneaking up behind me and running up and scaring me by lifting me up
off the ground from my shoulders. As a friend Jerry also went out of
his way to try and bless you. Jerry was always supportive of my
trumpet playing, and when I played in the LU Marching Band and the
OTGH Orchestra, Jerry often went out of his way to compliment my
trumpet playing to many others which would then get back to me. Jerry
in particular praised my ability to play the high notes on the
trumpet, which he called "The money notes". Jerry felt that I was
first called to be a Christian trumpet player more so than to be a
Pastor, per se, at a time when pastoring was the main focus of my
ministry. It was an honor to have played the trumpet for Jerry at TRBC
and an honor to open for him (And also for LU's Dr. Charles Hughes)
Jerry was a man deeply devoted to faith in God. Jerry was a big fan of
the writings of Oswald Chambers. Dr Falwell was also a big fan of the
late B.R. Lakin, and his mentor Dr. John Rawlings, who at around 93
years of age has now outlived him. Dr A. Ray Stanford, author of the
Handbook of Personal Evangelism which the late Dr. Falwell and Dr.
Curtis Hutson (Dr. Stanford gave Dr. Hutson his D.D.)both admired, is
also still alive at age 90. Jerry was a big sports fan, and he wanted
to turn LU's sports such as the LU football program into the
Evangelical version of Notre Dame.
Jerry had a lot of things about LU to be proud of, just an example of
three things are LU's biology Dept., LU's # 1 ranked debate team, and
LU's womens basketball program.
Before his death Jerry saw his approx 40+ year goal of moving Thomas
Road Church to Liberty Mountain come to pass"

May 1979: Falwell, a televangelist and Baptist pastor in Lynchburg,
Va., is recruited by far-right activists Howard Phillips, Ed McAteer
and Paul Weyrich to form the Moral Majority, a vehicle for bringing
fundamentalist Protestants into the Republican Party with the aim of
unseating President Jimmy Carter. The move was an about-face for
Falwell, who advised his congregation in 1965, "Preachers are not
called to be politicians but soul winners."
March 1980: Falwell tells an Anchorage rally about a conversation with
President Carter at the White House. Commenting on a January breakfast
meeting, Falwell claimed to have asked Carter why he had "practicing
homosexuals" on the senior staff at the White House. According to
Falwell, Carter replied, "Well, I am president of all the American
people, and I believe I should represent everyone." When others who
attended the White House event insisted that the exchange never
happened, Falwell responded that his account "was not intended to be a
verbatim report," but rather an "honest portrayal" of Carter's
position.
August 1980: After Southern Baptist Convention President Bailey Smith
tells a Dallas Religious Right gathering that "God Almighty does not
hear the prayer of a Jew," Falwell gives a similar view. "I do not
believe," he told reporters, "that God answers the prayer of any
unredeemed Gentile or Jew." After a meeting with an American Jewish
Committee rabbi, he changed course, telling an interviewer on NBC's
"Meet the Press" that "God hears the prayers of all persons....God
hears everything."
1980-81: After the election of Ronald Reagan, the Moral Majority
begins advocating for constitutional amendments banning abortion and
restoring school-sponsored prayer. The group also demands tax aid to
religious education.
September 1982: Falwell announces a drive to register 1 million new
voters before the November elections.
July 1984: Falwell is forced to pay gay activist Jerry Sloan $5,000
after losing a court battle. During a TV debate in Sacramento, Falwell
denied calling the gay-oriented Metropolitan Community Churches "brute
beasts" and "a vile and Satanic system" that will "one day be utterly
annihilated and there will be a celebration in heaven." When Sloan
insisted he had a tape, Falwell promised $5,000 if he could produce
it. Sloan did so, Falwell refused to pay and Sloan successfully sued.
Falwell appealed, with his attorney charging that the Jewish judge in
the case was prejudiced. He lost again and was forced to pay an
additional $2,875 in sanctions and court fees.
November 1984: Reports from the Federal Election Commission indicate
that Falwell's "I Love America Committee," a political action
committee formed in 1983, was a flop. The PAC raised $485,000 in its
first year--but spent $413,000 to do so.
May 1985: Falwell apologizes to a Jewish group for seeking a
"Christian" America. From now on, he says, he will use the term "Judeo-
Christian."
January 1987: Falwell holds a Washington news conference to announce
that he is changing the name of the Moral Majority to the Liberty
Foundation. The new name never catches on and is soon abandoned.
October 1987: The Federal Election Commission fines Falwell $6,000 for
transferring $6.7 million in funds intended for his ministry to
political committees.
November 1987: Falwell tells reporters he is stepping down as head of
the Moral Majority and retiring from politics. "From now on, my real
platform is the pulpit, not politics," he says at a news conference.
February 1988: The U.S. Supreme Court strikes down a $200,000 jury
award to Falwell for "emotional distress" he suffered because of a
Hustler magazine parody. Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, usually a
Falwell favorite, wrote the unanimous opinion in Hustler v. Falwell,
ruling that the First Amendment protects free speech.
June 1989: Falwell announces that the Moral Majority will shut down
its offices and disband.
January 1991: Siding with Americans United, the Virginia Supreme Court
unanimously rejects Falwell's quest for $60 million in state bonds for
his Liberty University. During the litigation, Falwell tried to
camouflage the school's rigidly fundamentalist character, telling the
court that the school would no longer discriminate in hiring or force
students to attend mandatory chapel (renamed convocation). All the
while, Falwell assured his congregation that Liberty had not changed,
insisting chapel will be mandatory "until Jesus comes."
January 1993: In the wake of Bill Clinton's election to the
presidency, Falwell mails fund-raising letters nationwide asking
people to vote on whether he should reactivate the Moral Majority. He
later refuses to say how much money the effort raised and tells
reporters he has no intention of reactivating the organization.
February 1993: The Internal Revenue Service determines that funds from
Falwell's Old Time Gospel Hour program were illegally funneled to a
political action committee. The IRS forced Falwell to pay $50,000 and
retroactively revoked the Old Time Gospel Hour's tax-exempt status for
1986-87.
March 1993: Despite his promise to Jewish groups to stop referring to
America as a "Christian nation," Falwell gives a sermon saying, "We
must never allow our children to forget that this is a Christian
nation. We must take back what is rightfully ours."
September 1993: Falwell announces he will not reactivate the Moral
Majority but will instead do political work through a group called the
Liberty Alliance.
March 1994: Falwell announces the formation of a new group, Mission
America, which he claims will mobilize like-minded clergy across the
country. Falwell describes the group as a "personal ministry" and says
it will have no budget or staff. Nothing more is heard from it.
May 1994: Jerry Falwell's Liberty Flame newspaper runs an article
calling TV preacher John Hagee a heretic for saying Jews can be saved
without accepting Jesus Christ. Falwell urges every pastor to "take
this information to the podium next Sunday."
September 1994: Falwell endorses former Iran-Contra figure Oliver
North for a U.S. Senate seat in Virginia. Falwell glosses over North's
legal problems, saying they happened "in the past."
1994-1995: Falwell is criticized for using his "Old Time Gospel Hour"
to hawk a scurrilous video called "The Clinton Chronicles" that makes
a number of unsubstantiated charges against President Bill Clinton--
among them that he is a drug addict and that he arranged the murders
of political enemies in Arkansas. Despite claims he had no ties to the
project, evidence surfaced that Falwell helped bankroll the venture
with $200,000 paid to a group called Citizens for Honest Government
(CHG). CHG's Pat Matrisciana later admitted that Falwell and he staged
an infomercial interview promoting the video in which a silhouetted
reporter said his life was in danger for investigating Clinton.
(Matrisciana himself posed as the reporter.) "That was Jerry's idea to
do that," Matrisciana recalled. "He thought that would be dramatic."
April 1996: Falwell hosts a "Washington for Jesus" rally in the
nation's capital where he holds a mock trial of America for engaging
in seven deadly sins: persecution of the church, homosexuality,
abortion, racism, occultism, addictions and HIV/AIDS (acronym:
PHAROAH). He declares the nation guilty "of violating God's law."
July 1996: Falwell announces a series of "God Save America" rallies in
evangelical churches to stop the United States from entering a "post-
Christian" era.
February 1997: Falwell sponsors a pastors' briefing in Washington,
during which he threatens to form a new political party if Republicans
waver on abortion.
June 1997: Falwell announces a plan to urge fundamentalist churches to
intervene in partisan politics. He vows to send sample candidate
endorsement sermons that pastors can read in their churches and says
he has already done this in the Virginia attorney general's race.
Falwell drops the plan after being reported to the IRS by Americans
United.
August 1997: Falwell pleads for funds for a new group, the National
Committee for the Restoration of the Judeo-Christian Ethic. In a fund-
raising letter, he promises to "get back in the ring" and be a
"spiritual George Foreman." He pledges to register 4 million new
voters and mobilize 50,000 pastors. After publishing a couple of fund-
raising letters, the group is never heard from again.
November 1997: Falwell accepts $3.5 million from a front group
representing controversial Korean evangelist Sun Myung Moon to ease
Liberty University's financial woes. The donation, and several Falwell
appearances at Moon conferences, raised eyebrows because Moon claims
to be the messiah sent to complete the failed mission of Jesus Christ,
a doctrine sharply at odds with Falwell's fundamentalist Christian
theology. (In 1978, before the Moon money started flowing, Falwell
told Esquire magazine, "Reverend Sun Myung Moon is like the plague: he
exploits boys and girls, and he should be exported.")
February 1998: Falwell accepts a $70-million donation from insurance
magnate Art Williams, for his debt-ridden Liberty University. Falwell
says the contribution will free him to focus on politics again.
April 1998: Confronted on national television with a controversial
quote from America Can Be Saved!, a published collection of his
sermons, Falwell denies having written the book or had anything to do
with it. In the 1979 work, Falwell wrote, "I hope to live to see the
day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any
public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and
Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!"
Despite Falwell's denial, Sword of the Lord Publishing, which produced
the book, confirms that Falwell wrote it.
October 1998: In a fund-raising letter, Falwell announces plans to
expand his ministry and to "immediately rededicate myself to use my
God-given skills as a national spokesman for morality and return to
the moral/political arena....[W]ith God's anointing and your prayerful
support, you will soon think I am omnipresent."
January 1999: Falwell tells a pastors' conference in Kingsport, Tenn.,
that the Antichrist prophesied in the Bible is alive today and "of
course he'll be Jewish."
February 1999: Falwell becomes the object of nationwide ridicule after
his National Liberty Journal newspaper issues a "parents alert"
warning that Tinky Winky, a character on the popular PBS children's
show "Teletubbies," might be gay. (Americans United was responsible
for releasing the information to the national press.)

Hi Michael,
My name is Paul. I am a left leaning Christian and blogger. Once in a
while I think I may even do something right.
First of all, I am not convinced that this is the place to be cutting
and pasting an article about Falwell or anyone else who isn't related
to the trumpet. Unless of course Rev. Jerry had some chops, if that is
the case you have my apologies.
You may believe that Jerry Falwell was a great example for Jesus
Christ. I believe that he is one of the worst ever. That is the great
thing about beliefs and opinions, we are all entitled to them.
Now, if you do choose to paste an article about a figure as polarizing
as Jerry Falwell, don't be surprised when people have negative
comments about him. By posting that article you have opened the
discussion, if by opening that discussion, you hear thoughts that
disagree with yours that offend you, tough. I am sorry, but you opened
the can of worms, don't be angry if someone decides to make spaghetti
with it.
Finally, to quote that great theologian Stan Lee...

Jerry loved the trumpets and marching band. He did a lot for them and
once even took a lot of unfair criticism in Christianity Today for the
large amount of $$$ that he spent on musical instruments(tubas, etc).
Here is just one example of how Jerry's influence helped trumpet
players.
Charles Gorby SR. once saw us on tv, and because of Jerry he donated
22 trumpets to Jerry/LU.
How do I know this? Because I was the one who went to Charleston, WV
to go pick those trumpets up.
Now if a student wants to go to LU or LCA but can not afford a
trumpet, there is one there for them to use free of charge.

Falwell outs idiot media

Doubtless you've heard about the brouhaha over Rev. Jerry Falwell's
recent remarks about creepy Teletubbies character Tinky Winky. The
good reverend reportedly announced last month in the pages of his
National Liberty Journal that Tinky Winky was a gay role model because
his "voice was obviously that of a boy" and was "carrying a red
purse."
"Now, further evidence that the creators of the series intend for
Tinky Winky to be a gay role model have surfaced. He is purple -- the
gay-pride color; and his antenna is shaped like a triangle -- the gay-
pride symbol," the item continued.
I came across a report on that NLJ tdibit and the accompanying
reaction to it as I was scanning the wires for entertainment stories
for the newspaper I work for and laughed at Falwell's gaffe. Do what
you will, but I believe as soon as a cultural conservative attacks a
television program they are simply courting trouble.
The story refused to die because Falwell kept getting whacked over the
absurdity of ascribing a sexual orientation on a character from a
children's television program, and during that whole time something
kept bothering me. Then it hit me.
I had seen Tinky Winky outed before and on no less than CNN
Interactive. In early January, while I was on Christmas vacation, I
saw a report on the web site on one of those dreary and inevitable
year-end "In/Out" lists. After going back and digging the story up, I
found that the august Washington Post had declared lesbian comedian
Ellen Degeneres "out" and "Tinky Winky, the gay teletubby" as "in."
A little more research -- something that Associated Press reporter
David Reed apparently forgot how to do -- turned up within minutes the
piece wasn't even written by Falwell, a fact that he later confirmed
through a press release.
"Dr. Falwell has never seen the teletubbies' TV program. Dr. Falwell
has never commented in any way on the teletubbies. He did not 'out'
Tinky Winky," stated the release.
"NLJ Senior Editor J.M. Smith wrote a 'parents' alert' in the NLJ
February issue. Editor Smith wrote an excellent warning to parents
about monitoring what their children watch on TV. He did not attack
the teletubbies or call for a boycott of the teletubbies. He simply
documented information that had already been reported in Time, People,
the Washington Post, CNN, E-Online and other national media over the
past year."
So why did NLJ's 'revelation' on Tinky Winky's supposed sexuality got
heavy press while The Washington Post got a pass? Steven Rice, a
spokesman for Itsy Bitsy Entertainment Co., which licenses the show in
the United States, may have hit on the reason without even knowing it.
Responding to the NLJ piece, Rice opined that Falwell's apparent
attack was nothing more than an attempt to further his own
conservative agenda. A protein rich target that the media could hardly
ignore.
And it makes sense right? Falwell had recently put his foot squarely
in his mouth with the announcement that the Antichrist was likely
already treading the Earth (my guess is somewhere in New Jersey) and
was a Jewish male. After that public relations fiasco, who wouldn't
believe that Falwell was attacking a children's television character
over perceived homosexuality?
Personally, I found the story behind the story more interesting and
it's summed up in two words: media credibility.
The media's coverage of the teletubbies turmoil in a teacup
illustrated exactly why the public is so distrustful of the so-called
gatekeepers of freedom. According to a three-year study by the
American Society of Newspaper Editors, the decline in public trust
over the past few years is marked, and for several good reasons.
The ASNE's Journalism Credibility Project found that, among other
reasons, the public saw too many factual errors in stories and were
suspicious of bias in media stories -- liberal bias to be specific.
A vast majority of the 3 000 polled in 1998, some 68 per cent, believe
that newspapers run stories without checking them "just because other
papers have published them" while 73 per cent of respondents were
skeptical of news accuracy.
When it came to bias, 78 per cent said that it did exist, while 50 per
cent agreed that some groups get a break when it comes to media
coverage. Proving its validity, the study found that the 17 per cent
who thought there was no bias in the media tended to be, and hold on
for this: poor, ignorant, idle Democrats. Surprise, surprise!
"There were also odd, singular answers given to this open-ended survey
question as well -- such as respondents who suggested that 'egg-
sucking-dog liberals' and 'devotees of what's politically-correct' are
beneficiaries of overly-favourable coverage...get advantageous
coverage. While some journalists might find these sentiments amusing,
there's a powerful colloquial voice in these kinds of phrases -- one
that's particularly important given the high percentage of respondents
that could volunteer an answer to this kind of question," said ANSE in
their December 1998 report.
That bias, said the society, comes because the public believes that
there is a lack of impartiality in reporting and an intent to
persuade.
When these two beliefs are taken into account, how can ANSE find it
hard to believe the public is exasperated of a media which has tried
to sell us nerve gas use in Vietnam, stories questioning Chiquita
Brands International's business practices written with stolen voice
mail, the Boston Globe's Mike Barnacle and Patricia Smith for lying in
their stories, the firing of New Republic associated editor Stephen
Glass after his editors discovered that he had lied about material in
his stories, and the countless examples of poor reporting during the
Clinton-Lewinsky scandal?
As St. Petersburg Times columnist Philip Gailey wrote recently, if the
news were a consumer product, the public would have demanded a recall
because of shoddy service.
"[W]hen we fabricate quotes and names, when we traffic in rumors and
unsubstantiated charges, we risk losing the credibility that is an
essential bond with our readers and viewers. We can live with our
honest mistakes, but we can't fulfill our role as a vital check on
abuses of government and other institutions if we compromise our
credibility with irresponsible and dishonest journalism."
What Gailey means is that the public is tired of catching the media in
lies, lies and more lies. The public is tired of playing the role of
the student to the media's teacher. The public has had enough of
shoddily researched stories. His fear of compromised credibility comes
too late. If the media cannot be relied upon to get the minor facts
correct in a story -- like the Falwell episode -- how can they expect
any greater trust when it comes to the important issues of the day?

and he was never a very good musician.He is a creap. Richard was an
outcast, and he did not have many friends in the corps. All of his
UCLA this and UCLA all of the time, that was a complete turnoff. He
looks like bozo the clown.
Richard often blasted a splat splat sousaphone style sound out of his
contra, 10 cents sharp all of the time at least, he never understood
how to properly play an ultratone, he over played the horn so badly at
times it was just awful.

I am extremely optimistic over the transition of leadership to the two
Falwell sons. Jonathan preached powerful sermons the first two
Sundays after Jerry Falwell passed away. Jerry Falwell, Jr. was in
the office two days after the funeral taking care of the absolutely
necessary things. I love their work ethnic, but more important than
that, I love their commitment to the vision that God originally gave
to Jerry Falwell.
The newspapers quoted what I said in prayer meeting the night after
Jerry died concerning the church and University, "The best days are
yet to come."
It's very easy to look back at the "glory" days of founding Liberty-
and those were glorious days-but we must all live in the future and I
am as excited what God will do through the Falwell sons as I was 37
years ago when I was excited what God would do through Jerry Falwell,
Sr.
Liberty University Commencement
The 2007 Liberty University Commencement was held May 19, 2007 in
Williams Stadium. The Liberty graduation class of 2007 presented me
with a gracious gift of $13,000 for the Towns Alumni Ministry Training
Center during the ceremony. In my appreciation to the class members,
I told them "Your gift shows that you have a great love and
appreciation for Liberty University . The very fact that you gave
towards this classroom building shows that you appreciate the learning
that you received in all of the classrooms at Liberty University from
all your faculty. Thank you for your investment in future
students."
Record Enrollment
This year we have approximately 28,000 students at Liberty
University , i.e., 10,700 on campus and 17,000 in distance learning
programs (all accredited). Recently I was in a board meeting for
Global Pastors Network where the president said to me, " Liberty
University is the largest Christian training institution in the
history of Christianity." I was blown away with that remark. I had
never thought about it before. This fall enrollment will go over
30,000 students. We are adding six dormitories, four stories each,
and we must construct a road on the west side of the campus, i.e.,
approximately one mile long and two traffic tunnels underneath the
railroad tracks to give us a third major exit off the campus (each
tunnel will cost approximately $1 million dollars).

I am a strong believer in the OTT/Mel Stratton ideas that the splat
overblown forced note will not travel as well as , and will not be as
loud as a dark controlled optimum resonant note. My belief in this
basic concept is one of the main reasons that my notes travel so well,
and why they are so loud and powerful.
