Hi All,
I am hoping to get some feedback on necks puffing
when playing. I can't help but wonder how the great
players make it look so effortless to play.
When I play my neck does expand. It seems if I play higher more demanding
parts, the inside of my throat
on one side has some discomfort at times. I am a
pretty big guy and do blow. I can't help but think that there is a better
way. I play on 16.5 mm mouthpieces
or larger with standard C cups.

When I was teaching for a music camp in the late 70's, I knew a high school
trumpeter with a condition in his neck where herniated muscles actually
seemed to inflate - he literally looked like a bullfrog. He said that some
air leakage into the tissues of his neck was actually happening. His doctor
rigged a leather belt-like collar to wear when playing that restricted the
inflation.

If you are noticeably "inflating" you may wish to see your doctor to make
sure that there is no other damage involved.

The trumpet player next to me at the gig last night broke two leader
supplied bow ties because of neck expansion. Some players won't wear ties
when they play.My neck goes from a 17 1/2 to an 18 1/2. (It's hard to buy 18
1/2 shirts.)I think that the neck muscles are herniated.Mine pops out more
on one side also.I showed it to my doctor once and he didn't seem to be
concerned but it's sure scary when you look in the mirror while playing.

>It doesn't puff up like a bull frog. It just expands somewhat. I too cannot
button up my shirt. Again, my throat hurts a little "internally" after a big
blow. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough. I am just wondering if there is
an exercise or something to improve the situation or
if I am doing something wrong.
Thanks,
Kevin

Michael Brecker (tenor sax player) had a similar problem which led to some
medical difficulties. For a time he wore a full neck support while playing.
The lead trumpet for the Airmen of Note experienced a similar problem and
pulled a muscle in his neck. He needed surgery and was off of the horn for an
extended period of time. I would myself check with a doctor to see if I was in
danger of doing serious damage.

A lot of trumpet players experience neck expansion. I do. I have had a few
two bow tie nights. The best one was back in the 70's when everyone was
wearing those choker beaded necklaces. They had dozens of beads strung on a
thin steel cable with a threaded clasp. One night while playing in a Chase
type rock horn band my necklace exploded and people started slipping on the
beads all over the dance floor. I almost chopped my neck off. Very funny.
