It's a longshot, but can anyone name a song based on this vague
description? I recorded it from the radio with the good old "hold the
cassette recorder near the radio" technique as a kid, but I fear that tape
is lost to the ages, unless it turns up the next time I move house.
-It was in the 80s.
-It was likely broadcast on an NPR affiliate.
-It was kind of a slow, cold and sparse instrumental rock or fusion song
that I (mis?)remember as having mainly bass and drums with a lot of reverb.
-The main feature was a solo trumpet slowly playing the lead melody in
quarter notes on the up beats:
. D5 . Bb4 | . C5 . A4 | .... | .... | . D5 . Bb4 | . C5 . F5
with the last F5 being held for a long time.
-Melody was vaguely reminiscent of the third bar of Westminster chimes

Use your PC to record a midi or keyboard version of it and put it
somewhere where it can be downloaded (use fileden - it's a free
file-locker).

OK, bear in mind this is from 25 year old memories and I'm not a musician:

I tried running it through Shazam, which is a music matching app, and it couldn't find a match for it. Are you certain it was a major release?

Neither could Midomi or Tunatic, but I really only expect those services to
only recognize Billboard charting songs anyway, not every song EVAR.
Anyway after some forum discussions on boardgamegeek and rateyourmusic, we
found it!

Sounds a bit like David Torn on guitar.

I've had pretty good success with it recognizing small group jazz recordings with which I wasn't familiar, so I'd say its scope is a bit wider than that. But good job in tracking it down. :)
