Here is a start for the trumpet only threads we've been talking about. What
does everyone here play on every day? Do you have a wishlist? Here's mine.
Not that anyone cares what I play, but this could turn out to be interesting
with some of the pros that frequent this group.

Tried a WT recently... it wasn't for me as far as playing goes. Amazing
sound difference between the three finishes, with gold being absolutely
beautiful and silver being positively brittle (good for lead I guess). I had
the guy from Mike's Music (Ontario) play them for me (did a much better job
than I did, though I like to think that not having played for 2 weeks prior
to tryout didn't help my chances!). Anyway, needless to say, he made the
Wild Thing sing...
Hoping to try out a Vintage One when I have enough money to buy one...
unfortunately, the Wild Thing whetted my appetite for gold, though silver is
probably easier to play for lead stuff.
I have no complaints about the sound of my Courtois, but it is hard work on
the heavy big band stuff. It's losing its lacquer somewhat too... but that's
okay, it just means it's got character.
Used to play a student model Blessing flugel - put me off flugels for life!
Played a B&H Sovereign cornet in the '80's in british brass band.
Championship section brass band scheduling put me off that for life!
Have been playing Bach 3D mouthpiece until recently... borrowed a Zottola
mouthpiece from our lead trumpet player... absolutely loved it. Bought it
from him and I'm now using it all the time, but I'm not convinced I'm
changed from the Bach permanently.

JB Weld holding the brace between the middle valve and the bell in
place. The lacquer wasn't in perfect shape when I got it used and over
the years deteriorated until I finally stripped it with paint remover,
buffed the heck out of it and recoated it with clear spray lacquer a
while back. It actually didn't work half bad. The handle is held onto
the case swivels by baling wire that my dad bent and stuck through
holes he drilled when the cheap plastic broke at the swivel points not
long after I got it. I lost my dad recently, and even if at some point
I have the horn refurbished, I'll never put a new handle on that case.

Mechanics have tools, we have trumpets. The right tool for the right
job. One doesn't always work well in every setting.

I am running a bit low these days. I wish I had all of the horns I
used to. Heck, I wish I could remember all of them. A few are just a
blur.
And "I can quit any time I want..."
<just a joshin' ya...>
I suspect it has less to do with neccessity than simply liking the
horns for various functional/cosmetic/emotional reasons, and people's
general propensity for collecting. Nothing wrong with that. I was
exercising my general propensity for being a wiseass... ;-)
For me, it is a tool. I know others who do collect......and do like to
have a new one every now and again. I probably have more tied up in a
couple of these than some have in all of theirs....not All!
:-)
Yeah but a set of wrenches don't cost ~$15,000+
:)
-S
I wish. Just for fun, I rolled through the Snap-On catalog to see what a
pretty complete set of tools + chest would cost. $15K was it, and that was
20 years ago...
But just this year I bought a vintage E.K. Blessing trumpet (fully
functional) for $22.

But an entire set of Snap ons would.
My wish list is that I get my newly repaired and customized Bach ML Bb
(12xxxx approx) back from my dad who has been playing it this week.
He says it added a whole step to his range. How's that for a Bach?
I have about 30 trumpets, will list them if anyone is curious.
Tom Meachum had over 200, I wonder how many he has now? The guy who
is a collector in California, (Hank somebody?) is said to have more
than 2000 trumpets.
Thanks Al. Not every trumpet works well for every situation. At my
session yesterday, I used my Bach Limited Edition for section parts
and solos but when it came time to peg some double A's, I pulled out
my Yamaha YTR 6335S. That YTR 6335S has been a bit of a security
blanket for me at times. I've owned it the longest (18 years)and it's
been a great horn for me. But, I can't help digging all my other
horns.
Actually, I don't think that I'm so bad when it comes to collecting
horns...I have a friend who has over 250 trumpets and probaly another
50 - 100 other brass instruments. That's being a bit obsessed in my
book. A likely candidate for a trumpet geek 12 step program. :-)
John
Me either. I know there are simply times where I pull out a tool from
the box and it works for the situation. I wonder (just typing as I
think) what guys do who have lucrative endorsement contracts and play a
plethora of horns? I know that I have several horns I really love, but
they don't always work for everything I need to do or do.
A very good studio guy I know told me once that the player's opinion of
the sound is the last one that counts. And, if you are doing commercial
work, he's absolutely right.
Wed did a Copland concert in April that I had to play the first trumpet
part on Music for the Theater. Ended up on a Schilke D, which worked
best for the orchestra and the theater.
If I had an endorsement with a specific maker, would I have as easily
pulled out that trumpet. Probably. Would that maker have been
happy-probably not. My loyalties are to sound, the ability to play what
I need, and the musical product, not the label on the horn.
So, does anyone have a Don Ellis quartertone trumpet they want to sell?
When it first came out that Billie Jean King was a lesbian, the joke was
that she would be a natural as a spokesman for the Snap On Tool Company.
I've never been able to keep a straight face when I hear that company
name.
