Obviously check your local pawn shops first.

Make sure you have original receipts of ownership, and check with your local
police department regarding a national registry for stolen horns, if one
exists. Were you at a rehearsal of some kind when they were stolen?
Sometimes a "friend" knows you have the instruments, and just waits for the
right opportunity. Contact local universities and music departments, as well
as public schools. Don't worry too much--they should turn up eventually!!

Good Luck, I feel for you, man.

With serial numbers in hand and proof of ownership. But, do this AFTER a police
report has been filed. If you file the report first, then contact the pawn
shop, dealing in stolen merchandise is a punishable offense. The other way
around, and you're just another Joe who has lost his stuff.

I wish, Tim. I had two students whose horns were stolen from locked cars in a
Wal-mart parking lot within two days of each other. Each time, the thief
riffled through their car, popped the truck with the auto trunk release, found
the horn cases, and took them. We never saw either horn again. Ever. Police
reports, friend of mine in the Pawn shop business from here to Indy never saw
them. Seems like there are too many easy ways to sell a trumpet these days.
Silver and shiny sells fast.

I can only imagine the sinking sense of loss you must be feeling. I'd feel
lousy enough if someone stole, say, my car or my stereo, but my *horn*? Now
it's PERSONAL!!

This thread got me thinking about insurance. Until recently I've been
buying under-$500 instruments and the idea of replacing a stolen or
destroyed horn wasn't a large issue. But now I'm getting ready to spend
some serious bread on a trumpet...do the experienced folks here have any
tips/pointers on instrument insurance that they could pass along?

Thanks,

If you're in the musician's union, you can probably get excellent rates
there (at least, that used to be a benefit they offered).

I think you can get it covered under your homeowner's or renter's
insurance, but you have to make sure that the insurer knows about the
instruments and that they are insured for REPLACEMENT VALUE (I would
recommend insuring them at list price, not street price).

It's always sad to hear about this happening to someone.

Insuring through the musician's union is one of only two way to guarantee their
safety on a gig. Most homeowner's insurance will not cover you in the event
that the horn is damaged and you are working, or stolen while you're working.
The other source of insurance that will protect the horn from theft on a gig is
available from ASCAP. As a member, you can protect your instrument and
equipment with a policy they have available.

Concerning a Homeowners Policy, just be aware, if you earn any income from
playing music or that trumpet, that a regular or normal homeowners does not cover
for professional usage. You need what's called, or perhaps used to be a Marine
Floater Policy. This is attached to your homeowners, or some other policy you may
already have. The premium is based on the replacement value, in hundred dollar
increments. Call your insurance agent for more details.

I too once had my horns stolen as well, and it's a terrible feeling.

Could it be local 342?

2122 Eastway Drive
Charlotte, NC 28205
Phone: 704-568-3465

It was just a guess, so i'm not exactly sure where you are. But you can always
call them and find out if they are your local, and if not, what is.

The instrument insurance through the union is very good and very reasonable,
and covers you under many more conditions than a rider on your homeowners.

Man that sucks ... I know exactly how you are feeling. 1986, had my
horns stolen from my car in St Louis (Schilke B1 & a Getzen Eterna 4
valve flug, plus my mpc's) never saw them again.

Good advise has been given. Contact you auto ins, guy, home / renters
ins. rep. & 'make sure' you axes are insured for replacement value.
Have a photo & serial numbers, do all the legal crappola right & at
least you can replace them.

Just add a King 4B.

One of the best features on my car is a little latch inside
the trunk that disables the inside-the-cab trunk
release.....When it is thrown, the only way into the trunk
is with the key....I didn't even know I had this feature
until I had the car about 3 years!

There is insurance from the music union. You can also talk to your home

With mouthpieces, it is a good idea to have a copy made, at least a template

I bought a gun safe from a local going-out-of-business
sporting goods store. When I am away from the house, I put
the horns and cameras that I don't take with me in it. It
could still be stolen, but probably only by professionals.
The average break-in-and-grab what you can thief couldn't
touch it. Beware of your run of the mill safe. They are
frequently made to keep papers in, and they are "fireproof".
They do this by lining the safe with a material that exudes
moisture when heated. Unfortunately, they will exude
moisture on any hot day, and destroy instruments like guns,
cameras and horns with fungus. I lost a good camera this way
years ago. Gun safes are ideal for horns, because they don't
have this fireproof lining.
