What's the best recording available in CD of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto?
I have one recording, but I've definitely heard better. I would imagine
one of Maurice Andre's performances is the best. Could someone let me
know?

And since you might know, what are some other great classical trumpet
pieces? This probably duplicates older threads. Sorry.

There is a great one out by Hakan Hardenberger.

It also has the Hummel, Hertel and Stamiz concertos on it as well.

It is on the Philips label. Catalogue No: 420 203-2

Th London concert is by far the best trumpet CD I have. Wynton
is stunning on the Haydn and the Hummel. And to think it was
done live!

When I first heard the Andre, I thought "with a lot of hard work, I
could do that." When I first heard the Marsalles (sp?) I thought
"well, I still have my day job -- I hope everyone else does."

I think every Maurice Andrč's recording of the Haydn concert is worth being
bought. Although I don't like the way Wynton Marsalis plays jazz, I admire
him for his playing of the classical trumpet stuff. There is a famous
recording called "The London concert" with an amazing cadenza.

I too vote for Marsalis, But I'll bet Sergei Nakariakov does a good job too. I
know he does on the Hummel.

I have to disagree. Wynton plays better jazz than he does
classical. Andre plays the best classical. I love his version of the
Haydn Trumpet concerto.

There is an artist on mp3.com that has a rendition of this that can be
downloaded and played (I recommend using WinAmp). Frances Thomas
(known as "Silvertrump"). Here is a link:

(scroll down the page a bit)

I wouldn't call it "best", but it would be hard to find much better.

The best I've heard was a performance by Timofey Dockshitzer, with the
Berlin Symphony. Unfortunately I don't have much to compare it with,
but the 2 or 3 others I've heard don't even come close. His technique
and attack are consistently excellent, and the cadenzas are very well
concieved and executed.

The best recording I ever heard of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto on a
modern trumpet is an LP by Thomas Stevens with the LA Philharmonic,
Zubin Mehta conducting, from the mid 1970's. Big dark sound, amazing
intonation, fluid phrasing, and great dynamic shading. It's the
standard by which I judge all other performances of the piece -- IMO, it
tops recordings by Andre, Black, Dokschizter, Ghitalla, Guttler,
Hardenberger, Herseth, Immer, Marsalis, Perkins, Smedvig, Wallace,
Wilbraham, Wobisch, and Vosburgh!

If anyone knows of a CD re-release of the Stevens recording, please let
me know!

My favorite version on a keyed trumpet is a CD by Mark Bennett with the
English Concert, Trevor Pinnock conducting, from 1990. It might still be
available.

I've only got about half of these, but my favorite that I do have is the
Gerard Swartz Haydn/Hummel recording from the late '70s or early '80s. I
particularly like his Hummel.

so how long did it take to mention Hakan Hardenberger who in m honest opinon
does the most stylistically aware Haydn out of anyone mentioned on this
thread also try listening to Crispian Steele Perkins.

Well now I need to find the Stevens recording. From what I know of his
playing it seems that it would be similar to the live radio broadcast
that I have of Adelstein.

Want to hear a smokin' cadenza? I would suggest that everyone listen to
the Mendez recording of the Haydn.

I like Mendez' and Dokschitzer's the best. BTW I also love listening
to Voisin and Harry James playing anything.

I just heard Sandoval's classical album the other day. He needs to
stick to salsa and Clarke technical studies.

For a little fun one name: Al Hirt

Thanks to all for posting your recommendations and opinions. Based on
your feedback, I went out and got the Marsalis "London Concert," and a
double CD package of Maurice Andre, "Music for Trumpet." I am
completely blown away. I haven't heard some of this music since high
school, and the rest is new. Genuinely made my day (and month). Thanks.
