Danny Stiles is probably one of the most underrated trumpet players in
the business.

The records he did with just him, Bill, and a rhythm section
consistently keep me alert and listening - very musical.

Except for that annoying chromatic run he would play in just about every
#@!?$% solo.

Hey, we all have 'signature' licks. I can think of worse ones.

Sadly, Danny Stiles passed away several years ago. His death was just
as underrated as his playing. The only mention of his death at the
time, was a small obituary in the local newspaper.
Sincerely,
Wayne

Yes,
I understand that he battled alcohol most of his life and had some personal
problems. He had committed suicide.

Danny Stiles. I don't know much about his career other than that he palyed
in the band for the Merv Griffin show for many years. That's where he and
Watrous met.
Best wishes,

The New York era Merv Griffin Show little-big band was an excellent group that
could play anything (and usually had to), always sounding bigger than they
really were. Just for the history books:
Trumpets: Danny Stiles (lead), Bill Berry
Trombone: Bill Watrous (replaced Bob Brookmeyer)
Saxes: Shelly Gold, Dick Hafer, Roger Pemberton, Richie Kamuca
Piano/Leader: Mort Lindsey (replaced Colin Romoff)
Guitar: Jim Hall (replaced Mundell Lowe)
Bass: Art Davis
Drums: Jake Hanna

When was Jack Sheldon on this band? (Just curious.)

Jack Sheldon joined the band when the show moved to Los Angeles in September 1970.
Pete Candoli played lead on that band, which also boasted the likes of Herb Ellis,
Ray Brown, Plas Johnson, and Jimmy Cleveland.
Jack Sheldon stayed with the show until it ended in 1986 and periodically appears in
the big band at Merv Griffin's Resorts International in Atlantic City.

Maybe he should have played the same boring solos most musicians played.

I think he was complimenting Stiles' playing.

Besides, isn't Mikey the one who trolls threads about 12-year-olds? Remember he's a self-proclaimed chickenhawk.

I actually talked to Danny not too long before he died. I knew him from when I was in High School. The guy who ran the stage band I played with had a knack for recruiting "ringers" when they came to town. The last time I saw/heard Danny play was at Church Street Station in Orlando. He was missing some teeth including one of his front incisors, it's amazing he could play at all but he did pretty well.

He was missing teeth? I don't think that was true.
