Am I wrong or is there a lot of similarity in the Claude Gordon book
"Brass Playing is No Harder Than Deep Breathing" and what Bill Adam
teaches? My teacher is a Bill Adam student, a lot of what he teaches
seems very similar to what Claude Gordon says in that book.

Since Bill Adam never wrote a book maybe the Gordon book would be a
good book to point people to as a reference for similar ideas, with
the caveat of course, that Gordon doesn't speak for Adam, yada yada
yada.

There are some differences in concept, but basically the approach is
similar.
I know one thing for sure, students of both teachers did a lot of
practicing. Like 6-10 hours daily.
That's an old-fashioned approach, hard practice, that seems to be out of
favor.
Just a thought....Back to my CG tongue level exercises before I break for
lunch.

I've also heard similarities in Chicowitz (sp?) and Adams. I think all of
the above focus on having a constant, relaxed breath to produce sound. And
so forth.

The common theme in all these good teachers is simplicity. Bill S.

The key is what "bach37" said. "Relaxed breath". Minimize stress &
tension in the throat neck & chest.

Both Gordon, and Adam "routines" can be used as models, but the key,
regardless of who's "routine" you play through is "relax, relax, relax".

I don't think you can get very good at the trumpet without quite a bit of
practice. It's just too physical. And I find that 45 minutes a day of CG
exercises helps my chops immensely.

At IU, it was normal for trumpet players studying with Mr. Adam to practice
on average 4-6 hours a day, and that is just on average. Others praticed
more too. I got very use to that. Often when I visited other colleges, I was
surprised to find many empty practice rooms. That was not the case in those
days. To get an idea of what it sounded like outside of Mr. Adam's studio
circa 1978, there is a sound file I recorded one weekday afternoon walking
down the hall.

Mr. Adam is going to have an 85th birthday in October and still teaches
although he is retired from IU. Please come to the Adam web site and sign
his online birthday card.

Mr. Adam doesn't have a book out because his approach is to customize the
lesson for each student. While I was a music student at IU, Mr. Adam
wouldn't assign the same exercises for everyone. But more importantly, the
instructions for playing them and the goal of what to focus on can be
different. Mr. Adam has the unique ability to determine what a student needs
and how to best relate to them so they can fully benefit from the lessons.

Mr. Adam does have a series of videos he did about 5-6 years ago which are
very good. It shows Mr. Adam working with students and you can see the
results. After each student he is interviewed too. You can find these at the
Bill Adam Tribute Web Site of where to buy them.
