Did anybody on the list attend Berklee College of Music. If so what
where your experiences? I would love to attend this college even though
right now I am only a sophmore in high school. I know to go here or any
music college I'm really going to have to get REAL serious about my
music. Well, thanks for any info

Eric,

I have a student there right now.....well, technically he is off for the
summer, but amazingly, he is not home, he is out on the road playing for
the summer. I guess that says a lot for the school, when even the kids
who aren't finished with the program are capable enough to find work
playing during their breaks.

Everything I know about it says it's hard to get into and hard to stay at,
but good.

Back when I checked out Berklee as a possible college choice, I was very
surprised to find out that they would take absolutely anyone into the program
who could pay the tuition (which was substantial then -- certainly more now).
Of course, getting in is one thing; staying in and doing well, another.
Berklee is best known for its training in commercial styles: rock, jazz, etc.,
and has some fine credits of students who later made it big: Quincy Jones --
and more recently Paula Cole -- are two that come to mind.

Have you also considered the University of North Texas? It is right up there
with Berklee in every way, and in many ways even better. The music school
cranks out great musicians in all styles, but UNT is best know for jazz. Guess
it just depends on what you're looking for.

Good luck!

I attended Berklee for one year:

I was 33 when I attended and the reason I left was that I wanted a
broader educational experience.

If your the typcial 18 year old out of high school, Berklee can be a
great place. The arbiting factor is that you know ahst you're looking
for careet wise. Chaeck out Greg Hopkins, Jeff Holmes (my teacher)
and Phil Wilson....it's a great place to make connections and get out
in the business...

It's my understanding that just about anyone who can pay 30K a year can get in,
although I know there are a lot of good players there as well as bad ones.

Geez, I was having a bad hair/typing day when I wrote that!

Besides the typos, it should read:
"Check out Greg Hopkins, Jeff STOUT (my teacher) and Phil Wilson....

Jeff Holmes is an excellent trumpeter/pianist/arranger/educator who,
last time I heard, led the jazz bands at University of Massachussetts,
Amherst....sorry bout that!

Berklee is a great place to go to learn about music. You must really want
to learn, though. It can be a little overwhelming and humbling, but if you
really put in your time there it is a great place. Greg Hopkins is a great
teacher, and an awesome player and arranger. You will get out of Berklee
what you put in. But remember, it is only a music school. There is
reported to be more to life...
