Did Benge manufacture and market the Burbank model trumpet?
Are these still in production? What are any definitive playing characteristics
of this model horn? I've heard both that Burbank is and is not a Benge.

Thanks kindly for any information!!

Vince,

The Burbank trumpet , as in the trade name "Burbank", was manufactured by
Kanstul. I ordered a Kanstul piccolo in 1990, and the horn I got was
stamped Burbank, so that is the news on those horns. They played well, to
my mind the Bbs play a lot like the horns that Besson is selling as the
International Series instruments. The Bessons might be a little heavier,
but they are both quality instruments. The Burbank trumpet is no longer
available, but Kanstul still has parts for them, and in fact has retained
many common parts with current models of their instruments made for their
own line or others.

The Benge you are referring to is in fact a Benge that was made in
Burbank, although I must admit that I've always thought of them more as an
"LA Benge". Perhaps I am wrong in that understanding. There were Chicago
Benge instruments that were also quite good, as were the LA ones. The
others (meaning the current UMI lot) are unimpressive to me.

Hope this helps, and please remember this is all from recollection. I
could be wrong!

Vince,

The Burbank Trumpet (still available, as far as I know, from Michael
Thomas International, 800-827-7831) is made by Kanstul Musical
Instruments. It was made from the original design of the earlier
Burbank Benge trumpet. The Burbank Benge was produced by Elden Benge,
and, after his death in 1964, by his son Donald, in Burbank California,
from 1956 (the family's move to California from Chicago) to 1971 (when
Benge was acquired by King Music).

(FYI, the "L.A. Benge" horns you see around are Benge trumpets made
while Benge was owned by King from 1971 to 1981. I have heard that
Donald Benge was still involved during this time, but others have said
he was not. These are also nice horns - I play the large bore model 6,
FWIW.)

The Burbank Trumpet started manufacture in 1984, after the acquisition
of King (and Benge) by UMI in 1981 and UMI's move of production to Ohio
in 1983. Zig Kanstul and Donald Benge were in together on this
endeavor, and Donald's interest was bought by Zig sometime in the
1990's.

While not *technically* a Benge, the Burbank Trumpet plays well and
basically carries on the Benge sound and feel. Much more so than the
horns made by UMI with "Benge" engraved on the bell. The choices as to
model are reduced from the original Burbank Benge models (only models 3,
3+, 5 and 6 are now available), and the valves are monel instead of
nickel-plated. If you are looking for a successor to the Burbank Benge,
then the Burbank Trumpet is *it*.

FWIW, Kanstul also makes the "Chicago" model which is based on the
original Chicago Benge made by Elden prior to 1956. Also a very nice
instrument. Zig knows his stuff!

The Burbank Benges were made by Eldon Benge after he left Chicago and
before the facility moved to Anaheim (where "LA" Benges were made).

You might want to look at:

It is a cool piece of Benge history.

BTW, I play on an Eb/D Burbank Benge.

He's right you know Al! My LA Benge is *not* a Burbank Benge - I know my
place in the hierarchy of Bengeism! :)

Nev and Matt,

You've both added to my knowledge of Benge, which is painfully thin. To
be honest, most of the players here in the midwest are brought up as Bach
players, from the moment they get the first beginner horn until they buy
the first pro model. For that reason alone, Benge instruments have not
been a large part of my experience or where I might see them and play them
to get to know them well. Only in the last few years have I become
acquainted with the Benge line, and that has been the UMI Benge. It is an
area that I appreciate, but grant that my knowledge is limited.
Fortunately, I have other fine folks who can correct my errors and
shortcomings. Thanks again!

Best,
