my son has a trumpet that came with the Yamaha 11B4 mp. For
reasons he cannot explain, after school band or summer music camp, he
is now in the possession of a Vincent Bach 7c mp. How it got in his
case no one knows... He is going into 6th grade band.

Anyways.... he has been using the 11B4 for a year now. Can someone
comment on what, if anything, he can expect in his tone when he tries
out this new
mystery mp ???

thx - Craig

The Bach 7C is the standard mouthpiece sold with Bach trumpets (who make
excellent pro trumpets plus student models). The 7 C is the mouthpiece that
I used in starting students on trumpet when I worked in music. Unless
things have changed in the last 15 years, it is probably the mouthpiece his
band director will prefer. When he moves on into upper grades, and if he
becomes a fairly proficient player, his director might swap him to a
mouthpiece that would complement his skills and weaknesses better. Of
course, if the director sees a problem, he might switch him earlier. You
can't go wrong in 6th grade using a Bach 7C. There are some
characteristics about the mouthpiece that a more advanced player might
decide to leave it for, but for his age, it is perfect.

He will still sound like a 6th grader. :-)

I think the 11B4 is the Yamaha equivalent to the 7C (not identical,
but Yamaha's starter mouthpiece).

If he's been using the 11B4, tell him to stick with that. 6th grade
is not the time to be experimenting with mouthpieces except in extreme
cases where the starter mpc is impeding the progress of the student.

I like what Jeff has said. Let him stay on the 11B4. IT and the 7C
are pretty close albeit I've had very good results of my younger
students with the 11B4.

Good point. I was not clear if he still has the 11B4 or if it disappeared
when the Bach 7C appeared (somehow got swapped). Either mouthpiece is fine.
Better still, his instructor should be telling him what to use. (I just
started my son on a Bach 7 C-he has had 1 lesson. :)
