Like the header says, I'd like to find a really good Big Band CD...
good not only in the performance of the muscians, but also one
that is an excellent recording. I'm posting it here because I want
some screaming trumpets on there! ...kind of like the performance that was
on the Grammy show a couple of years ago by the "GRP All-stars." Remember that?
It had, among others, Arturo Sandoval blowing the roof off the place!

So how about some recommendations?

How about recordings with Maynard and is band from the 50ties and
60ties. My favourite is the Birdland Dreamband CD. There does not seem
to be too many recordings from the 60ties on CD. I have a tape copies of
Message from Birdland and Message from Newport (I think these are the
titles.) I have not found them on CD. Anybody know where I can get
these?
I am also looking for records with high note players, but they are
difficult to find. One of my favourites are the CHASE recordings, which
is rock music with four trumpets, Bill Chase on top. Of course you find
Jerry Hey and Gary Grant in pop-recordings, such as Rufus and Chaka
Kahn, Earth Wind and Fire, Al Jareau and many others. And I think Jon
Faddis have made at least three recordings. Anybody know Memphis horns?
Are their recordings any good?
Anybody have additional recommondations?

An absolutely phenomenal recording is Buddy Rich: The Greatest Drummer
That Ever Lived ... With "The Best Band I Ever Had". This is on the DCC
Jazz label, DJZ-606. The charts are great, the playing exceptional, and
the recording magnificent. Get it.

Thanks... but I was hoping to find a newer example... I want a high quality
recording as well as a high quality performance. I doubt a 50's -60's recording
will do it. Know of a newer CD?

...I'm not a player, but my dad is... I remember CHASE very well. We had some
8-tracks. I can still remember a few of the songs... something called "Batchawa"
and "Run Back to Mama" ..Yes, it was the 70's!!! I can still remember one of the
covers... Bill Chase in a gold metal shirt blowing the horn straight up into the air
with a big afro hair-do! (he was white, but hey, it was the 70's!!) I'd love to hear
it again, but I doubt we ever will!!

Try Michael Camilo's CD entitled "One More Once" First and foremost....the
ensemble plays some good stuff, but Jon Faddis is playing lead..so there
are occasional journies into the stratosphere.
