To all of my friends who replied (about a month ago) to my query about doing
a complete play-through of the Arban Book.

1. I again apologize for calling it a "Freak Show Stunt" and thank them for
encouraging me to do it.
2. I have enjoyed it (despite my oldest sons serious questions about my
mental health)
3. I finally can say that I have less than 100 lines left! (97 as of this
afternoon)

I have to admit that I didn't PRACTICE the lines. I've just read them
through (having played most of them before).

OK, here goes (with apologies for any parts of this that go off topic)

As many of you know, I am a Band Director in Iowa who was "born and raised"
on the tuba. In the geographic area where I settled to teach I had exactly
ONE paying gig on the tuba in about 5 years and found I was doing most of my
performing with a little white stick. I decided to make a change. I sold
my Mirafone 1864U tuba and used the money to buy an open hole flute, wood
clarinet, a good alto sax, an intermediate level Yamaha trumpet and an Olds
Recording F attachment trombone that I literally rescued from a dumpster and
rejuvenated.

The idea was to (relatively) master each of them so that I could demonstrate
and/or play along with even the best of my students. Each year I would
learn ALL of the All-State Band audition etudes, etc., then spend the rest
of the year practicing playing a different instrument - usually whatever
felt weakest at the time. The effect on my teaching was a "life changing"
experience. I'm still doing it.

I needed a jump start to get back my brass chops after spending a year on
percussion. I came across a copy of the Arban book that one of my college
teachers gave me years ago. I had played from it off and on and had used
bits and pieces with some of my students. The book was in several pieces
and I had the odd thought that there were probably lines in that book which
had never been played.

I posted a question as to whether there was anyone in the group who could
claim to have played every single line in the Arban Book. Several wrote
back that they had (and some said they do it on a regular basis like 1 or 2
times a year). They told me that I should try it, and the rest, as they
say, is history. The chops are coming back. I feel good and things are
going well. I have been alternating between trumpet and euphonium and will
finish later this week.

And now you know.....................
the rest of the story.
