Mingus Big Band "Blues and Politics" with Randy Brecker, Earl Gardner,
Alex Sipiagin playing in the hottest trumpet section and big band
going. Big band music is alive and well.
Warren and Allen Vache "Mrs. Vache's Boys" Traditional jazz just
doesn't get much better than this. Warren shows us again why he is
jazz's most under-appreciated trumpeter (cornetist, actually).
Mark Isham's "Miles Remembered" If you like Miles Davis' post Silent
Way stuff, you'll love this. If you don't like Miles' later "electric"
stuff, avoid. Hot guitar playing by Kansas City's own Peter Maunu (us
baby boomers are suckers for that electric guitar thing).
Bennie Wallace "Someone To Watch Over Me" I had to throw at least one
non trumpet oriented album in here. Gershwin tunes by, in my opinion,
one of the greatest living tenor saxaphonists.
Anthony Wilson's "Adult Themes" Gerald's son is making some of the
nicest jazz around these days with his nonet, led by the excellent Carl
Saunders on trumpet. An absolute jem of an album, as is his first solo
CD called "Anthony Wilson."
Dave Douglas "Convergence" Nobody is playing better than this guy
these days, nor can anyone else match his creativity and artistic
vision.
Tim Hagans/Marcus Printup "HubSongs-The Music Of Fredde Hubbard" This
was released in 1998 but it desearves mentioning again. The hottest
trumpet playing I've heard ALL DECADE. Listening to these guys burn it
up is quite humbling-- a reminder that I should be practicing right now.
A classic.
Re-issue of the year: Harry Edison's "The Swinger and Mr. Swing" A
double CD that I just can't seem to take off the player.
Worst jazz album of 1999:
Olu Dara's "In The World" I was excited about this album when I first
heard about it... Cornetist Olu has paid his dues and been around a
long time, and is in Robert Altman's "Kansas City" movie. This is the
most dissappionting record... he only plays his cornet a couple of
times, and noodles around on guitar playing amatuerish John Lee Hooker
type blues. I love the blues, but Olu GAVE me the blues, on this waste
of 12 bucks.

Before you buy.
Steve Turre "Lotus Flower" Next to Dave Douglas, perhaps the most
creative guy on the jazz scene today-- and much more "mainstream" than
Dave Douglas. This guy should be getting a heck of a lot more press.
Twenty years from now when people are listening to the jazz classics of
the 90's, Steve Turre's music will be a big part of it. And the kicker
is... he plays trombone and conch shells.
Dr.Cyclop's Dream "The Herbie Nichols Project" Along with the Mingus
Big Band, a group that is able to ADD to what a jazz legend has already
done. A wonderful ensemble; challangeing, yet accesible.
