Hello everyone!

I am a bassist who is arranging some sheet music for a quartet. I need to
know what the range is for both the trumpet and the saxophone (mainly
tenor, but it would be good to know the others as well).

If anyone could tell me the following for each instrument, it would be
greatly appreciated:

1) The full range of the instrument (in concert pitch)
2) The "comfortable" range of each instrument (in concert pitch)

Many thanks in advance!

Mike, for the trumpet there really isn't a "full range." There is a
very definite "comfortable range" though which depends a lot on who
you're writing for. I would suggest anything up around Bb above the stave
as a safe range.

You can find out various scales from whoever you talk to. I would suggest
asking the people you are writing for. Some trumpet players whine about an E
above the staff. Some won't even bat an eye at a double C. Gotta ask the
players.

Good luck.

Range of a trumpet - about 30 feet if you have a good arm.

(old joke - sorry, I could not resist).

that is far too conservative a figure. any good trumpet player should be able to
throw one 30 *yards* with decent control, without even exerting himself.

the trouble would be finding a trumpet worthy of being thrown that far,
although i once had one that was screaming to be thrown.

Is that a Callichio/Callet type lightweight, standard weight Bach type
or a Monette/Taylor type heavyweight instrument? Remember though that
the filled in parts of a Monette Raja type might help to give it lift,
and therefore it could possibly fly further than you might expect on
examining its weight alone.

>(old joke - sorry, I could not resist).

Sorry for the equally silly reply - I should have resisted!
