What inspires you to practice?

As a teacher, I am constantly aware that my most successful students are
those ones that are self-starters. These are the kids that pursue new
musical opportunities without being prompted, look for new listening
experiences, and most importantly, take responsibility for their own
practice. At some point, any trumpet player that pursues their playing
beyond high school becomes that person, but what is the trigger?
And so I post these 2 questions:
What currently inspires you to practice?
What do you think your moment of trumpet self-awareness was?

get paid.

a soloist or are in small combos. When you perform in small groups or solo,
the fear of embarrassment makes you practice. It is easy to hide/coast in
full bands.

I'm a comeback player where a combination of shame, ego, and vanity
made me pick up the horn again. I've started to do many things during
my life, but never finished what I started out to do. While I might
not achieve a complete 'finish' to my trumpet playing abilities (who
does?), at least I'm on the road to that end and not hung up by the
wayside.

When I turned sixty and realized that I'm finally emancipated by being
retired, no wife, kids grown and gone, and nominal expenses. Now I can
resume something that means a lot to me sans the worries and
aggravation of previous everyday living. It's a new beginning for me
where playing again resuscitates things other than playing that I also
put aside rather than spending all day at the senior's center playing
cards, bingo, and complaining about constipation and diarrhea. The
horn is so to speak my fountain of youth.

Revised:
My greatest motivation to practice right and often is to make fools
out of all of my critics.
I take my practice sessions very seriously, I practice right, I
practice often, and I practice using the fundimentals.
Practice all of your scales, all major and minor scales, the chromatic
scale, practice counting and sight reading. Work on your theory and
piano. Warm up and down every day no matter what. Focus on lip slurs,
build your range, the limit of your range is you, and you can play
higher notes than people think you can if you believe.
I work on the fundimentals, it is the fundimentals, and my 30 long
years now of practicing right that makes me confident that given the
chance, I will outplay any fool with a big mouth and a bad practice
regiment , 100 % of the time.
I have had , over these years, had a lot of critics, but no takers on
a trumpet playing challenge.
Practice right.
Practice 6 days a week.
Practice , practice, and then practice again.
Practice in an echo chamber where you can hear what you sound like.
Practice right or your just wasting your time.
Let your EARS be your best critic, not other trumpet players.

each, from stages west in pidgeon forge tn, where alan jackson , dolly

He is about one phone call away from being arrested. And I fully intend to
forward his latest emails to me to the Tennessee Division of Charitable
Solicitations and Gaming.
I have not made the police phone call out of compassion for a man who is
obviously mentally ill. I am not in a compassionate mood as far as it
pertains to the "dr's" "ministry" ...
I will be reporting this latest round of emails to the relevant Tennessee
authorities. If he continues with his internet assault, I will make that
police phone call as well.

recruiting poster. Thankfully though, I mellowed down as the years
went by.

Had they used me for recruiting ... let's say the navy would be a different
place, but a bit more friendly. A guy I know *was* on the recruiting
posters for the Marines for several years, and was a major-league jerk.

When I was in the Navy '64 - '68, it was official policy that a person
with the rating of MU could not serve as recruiters or push boots thru
basic. Only one MU pushed a company of boots as an experiment - MU1
Piper. Knowing Navy musicians like I did, I can see why this policy
was put into place. 8-)

where nobody was there. I called at a time that i thought nobody was
in so that i could leave a message to him asking him to please leave
me alone, that it would be in both of our interests if this stopped.
That was the content of the message. there were no threats on those
messages, and when i found out that the # was actually to his home, i
have not made any calls since, nor will I. I said i was sorry for the
home call, it was NOT intentional, therefore, i did not break any Tn
laws. It was unintantional as i thought the # was to his RI school
office. I should have looked up the # to verify that it was a ri #,
for that i was wrong to trust my sourse, who in this case screwed me.
