I've got a Holton Nickel plated cornet that I've had for years, and having
not cleaned it properly before storing it, it's become quite dull. Can
anyone recommend a good way to clean this horn myself?

TIA

Jeremy

Nickel plating is not shiny. Unlike silver or gold, the plating has to
be lacquered once polished bright to keep it from returning quickly to
the dull look that nickel normally has.

So, the short answer is it can be done, but the long answer is that
without lacquering the horn after the polishing, it won't last.

Hi Al,
What could one use to polish nickel plating?

John,

Good question. From my understanding, it will polish like brass, with a
wheel and some rosin. I am not sure if Brass polish will do what it
does for brass to nickel.

How are things in sunny California?

Ok, maybe it's not nickel then - but when I got it, it was shiny silver
(almost like a chrome/mirror finish) and now it's not. Any suggestions?
I've tried soaking in warm water and scrubbing with a cloth, but that didn't
do anything....

I never had a nickel plated horn, but I did own a beautiful nickel
plated commercial style can opener once, and as I remember, it polished
up quite well with Brasso....But Brasso dries into a white powder, so be
careful to keep it out of your valves....Wash the horn after using
it.......
