I am considering the purchase of a new synth. I have been eyeing (earing)
the KORG 01/WFD for many months. I have seen some product info on the rack
version KORG 03R/W. This unit claims it has the same "heart" as the 01/W
but the product info does not indicate any wave shaping (WSEG) that is part
of the 01/W. Does anyone know if the Wave Shaping Tables are missing from
the 03. Is there another rack version of the 01? I'll be using a DX7II-E!
as the master keys and MOTU Performer to sequence. I prefer a rack unit
but do not want to miss those amazing Tables (and sounds!!) in the 01.
I am grateful for any comments/experiences....
Many thanks,

Ken,
The 03R/W doesn't provide the waveshaping function. The question is, do you really need
this function ?
I use the 01W and I found the waveshaping useful for creating weird "modern funk" sounds.
However, the way it is implemented on the 01W just doesn't give you enough flexibility to
use it as a powerful synthesis tool (the only control you have over the waveshaping is
a 3 points envelope and a velocity response, but you miss keyboard scaling and other
modulation sources...)
I think there is a rack version of the 01W, called 01RW or something... But my advice
would be to go for the 03R/W, that has almost the same samples than the 01W, and use
the saved money for a additional MIDI-controlled effects processor, that will probably
prove more useful than the waveshaping function.
Patrice.
If wave shaping is what you want in a rack unit then you want the 01/RW.
The 03R/W IS NOT a rack version of the 01/W. It does contain a lot of the
same waveforms as the 01/W, in addition to others, but the ordering is
different. As a result, progs and combs do not correspond directly (so you
can't take a sequence set up for an 01/W and play it through an 03/RW).
It still has all the great KORG sounds, as well as the full effect processors
as the 01/W. The other feature of the 03 is the addition of a general
MIDI patch bank in ROM.
The 01/RW on the otherhand is identical to the 01/W except for the keyboard
of course. (NOTE - sequencer does not have the same capacity as the 01/WFD).
There is a program card you can get for the 01/W to give you the general MIDI
patch set.
