I have a small handful of midi synths etc. and I am tired of moving midi
cables constantly. Not to mention that ONE midi out I am always short. At
this time I am not using a computer in my rig. What is the best midi
patchbay? Were can you get them, I don't see them mentioned allot? (which is
surprising given the current rage in electronic music)

Thanks
Martin

I've got a used Kawai MAV-8 midi patchbay that has worked pretty good for me. I
occasionally see them on eBay at around $80-$100.

For the value used I would suggest a DMC MX-8. They are 6 in by 8 out and
include useful functions like filters, merging, channel switching and more
cool stuff. My band uses 2 so as to be able to talk to all of our synths.
Our bassist is developing an editor for the MX-8. Check out his progress
here:

There used to be a lot of patchbays, but they seem to have lost
popularity. They've been mostly replaced by midi interfaces. Some
interfaces double as patchbays, like the MOTU MTP AV series.

Here are a few patchbays to look for on the used market:

Digital Music Corp. MX-8, 6x8
360 System Midi Patcher, 8x8 (one of my favorites)
JL Cooper MSB+ version 2, 8x8
JL Cooper MSB 16/20, 16x20 (huge)
JL Cooper Synapse (I think 16x20 also)

A company called KMX also made some patchbays, one was 8x8 and one was
15x16 I believe. They were distributed by Ensoniq for a while, so also
look under the Ensoniq brand name.

Kawai made something called MAV-8 I believe.

Yamaha made a patchbay called the midi junction controller, or something
like that. MJC-8 is maybe what it was called.

Roland also made a midi patchbay, but I forget the name.

I see these patchbays on eBay almost all the time, so you should be able
pick one up fairly cheaply and quickly. Good luck!

I have one of these sitting here. It's just a basic 8x8, but after it
arrived I quickly wondered how I ever did without a patchbay.

A-880, basically 8x8 but with a handy 2>1 merge function.

Other options -

Akai ME30P 4x8
Akai ME80P 8x8

Best I've seen is the MX8 from Digital Music Corp. They can
be had for about $100 if you watch the 'net. www.voodoolab.com
We use two in my band to create a virtual 9-in 14-out patchbay.

Also I've got a FREE patch editor:

I've used several patchbays (JLC, DMC, MIDIMan), but my favorite is the Peavey
MIDI Master (8x8). It has a CV in jack and a knob that can both be assigned to
MIDI CC's. As with the others mentioned, you can find MIDI Masters on ebay.
