I've just acquired a DX7. It came without a sustain pedal, and I've
realized how nice it would be to have one. It seems to me that a
sustain pedal may be no more than a switch (or are there 'levels of
sustain'?). If so, it ought to be trivial to make one out of a foot
switch, some cable and a miniplug. Would that work? Or is it a more
complex device than it seems?

Thanks for any info.

Yes indeed! It's just a switch, as is the portmento input. Sustain is
ON when the switch is OPEN. You can check this by just plugging a patch
cord into the pedal jack - sustain should be on.

Does anybody have any idea why it was made this way. It seemd to that
the only difference to the other way round is, that there has to be an
additional switch in the connector to test if there is a pedal plugged
in or not.

I also remember that some other companies (e. g. Korg) use the CLOSED
contact to enable sustain.

I have two of these pedals (sustain, portamento). I forget the actual model
number but they were real cheap (under $20 CDN) so I'm not sure if it's worth
building one.

Yamaha sells a sustain pedal which looks and feels a lot like a real
one for about $25. I have about 4 of these which I use with all of my
instruments because the feel and construction is very good. (Except for
those instruments which require a normally colse pedal a la Korg.)

Recommend you get the Yamaha pedal ASAP. I think the number is FC-25 (?)
I can check on this for you if necessary.

p.s. DON'T use one of those cheapo 3"x4" stomp style pedals as your
sustain pedal. They don't feel nearly as good.
