I have recently tested an IOMEGA-zip drive with my ASR.
Somehow, the ASR-10 refuses to format the drive. In fact, it seems
like the SCSI-bus just locks itself, and the zipdrive just hangs.
(I can't get the disk out unless I reboot the zip-drive, pressing eject
doesn't do anything...)
This sucks.
I have tried everything, like switching termination on/off, switching
scsi-ID's.
The only time I got any real life-signs from the zipdrive, was when I
put it in my chain of two other scsi-drives (ID 0,1). Then I at least
could try to change the scsi-device to the zip-drive, achieving a
'not an EPS-media..' message. However, I couldn't format the disc while
It was hangin' in the scsi-chain - it gave the same result as before...

thanx in advance..
: This sucks.
These issues are discussed in Ensonq's www pages at
http://www.ensoniq.com/
to put it short ... your zip drive has to be pretty new to
work with ASR-10. (1-1,5 month or so) check the www pages !

You do not have a problem with your chain or you cables...in fact, you
don't really have a "problem"...everything is working as it should...
The "problem" is that Iomega changed something about their zip drives
so that the format command that the ASR-10 issues has no
effect...basically it doesn't work with their drives anymore...
The only solution is to hook the drive up to a mac with epsM or a pc
with EDM and format the drive from there...there has been much
discussion about this on the EPS list...you might consider joining...
To join send a message to majo...@oak.oakland.edu with
subscribe eps <your address> or
subscribe eps-digest <your address>
in the body...
Also...you can contact Iomega and tell them you need a certain
specification of drive and they will send you one that does work with
the ASR-10...but I don't remember the specification...write me back if
you are interested in pursuing this path...
You also might want to take a look at the ensoniq web
site...http://www.ensoniq.com...
>This sucks.
I know ;)...good luck...hope some of this helps...
ps. your not crazy ;)...when I first got my ez135 it wouldn't eject
the disk...I thought for sure that I was doing something wrong...but
it was just broken...just my luck...I think my experience is what
induced me to respond...

I have experienced this exact same problem with a Zip drive a friend of
mine is using on his ASR.
The problem you are experiencing is that the previous format wigs out the
ASR. You shouldn't have this problem with the carts that you buy blank,
but the one you recieved with the drive is both preformatted and locked
(which is a software lock on a reserved track on the drive). Furthermore,
the only way to unlock it is to use the utility software that comes on the
cartridge itself, for either PC or Mac -- that is -- UNLESS you hold the
cartridge infront of a big huge woofer while playing load music. This
will effectively remove both the previous format on the cart as well as
the lock. It might sound bogus, but it worked for me!!
Hope this helps...

I have a friend who also tried the Zip with an ASR-10 and couldn't get it
to work. He eventually ended up buying a Syquest EZ-135, as did I when I
couldn't get the Zip to work with my S-1000.
I'd say bring it back if you can, and but a Syquest.

Hi,
This is a known problem, that has supposedly been fixed.
Check out the statement on the following ensoniq web page.

Actually...it has to be old...the newer ones are the ones that don't
work ;)...
: Actually...it has to be old...the newer ones are the ones that don't

: GOD
Partly true. The older ones work propely, and then there came
a time when they stopped working properly with ASRs. Now in the
new models the problem has been fixed.
So you have to have an old or very new zip drive if you want to
use it with ASR.
