What is the difference between a dbx 266 compressor and an alesis 3630
compressor? As I understand, both units have 1/4" inputs on them.. do
both have hard/soft knee compression? Which do people prefer?

Am I correct in assuming that the dbx 166 compressor is a more advanced
version of the 266? (XLR ins/outs)

Thanks!

The Alesis compressors "click" when you run bass material through them.
They are useless because of this flaw.

DBX 266 is better!! It is indeed a fact that the 3630 can't handle low
frequencies!!!! BTW, the 166 is the more "pro" DBX 2 ch comp - the 266
is from the "project one" series, aimed more at the home user etc (still
good though!!).

If you really want an outstanding compressor in this price range, get
the new RNC comp (stands for Really Nice Compressor) hand assembled in
Texas for $175 (call 1 800 343 9976 for info)...it compares to comps
costing $1000+ ...do a search via Deja News & see what everyone says
about this (also see review in last months EQ)!!!! I have one & it
rules!!!

David.

I've never noticed a "click" in my 3630, and I use plenty of bass.
Hmm... I wonder if Philip might elaborate on this claim.

This is because the next thing out of his mouth will be for you to get
one of those rnc compressors.

I too have never found the 3630 to click. But I have heard the rnc
compressor click.

I can't find a click in my 3630...maybe it's just with older ones.

Being a bass player, I have noticed that 'click' on a number of
compressors. I thought it was just me... I'd really like to understand
more about what causes this.

The ones that I _have_ noticed the click on: Alesis 3630, DBX project
One, DBX 1066.

Ones that I have used repeatedly, with _no_ click: DBX 166, DBX 160, DBX
half-rack (can't remember the model number, has a slider to set
compression ratio), Aphex Expressor (651), ART Pro VLA, old MXR limiter,
Valley People (can't remember exact model), BBE preamp w/compressor.

In all cases, I've used various settings from mild to heavy compression.
The clickers always clicked, regardless of settings; the non-clickers
never did. I don't think I ever tried multiple units of the same type to
see if it was a defect or a 'feature', just assumed it was a design
flaw.
