I'm guessing an OB8? Could be wrong though.

It's an Oberheim. OB-8, most likely. I'm not sure whether the OB-Xa had
been released by then. There's definitely some Roland JX-3P elsewhere on
that album, though. The title track has one of the presets all over it.

In the video Eddie's playing the OB-Xa. Of course that doesn't mean that's
what's on the record.

Daniel.

Hello, thanks for the response. Was the OB-Xa
manufactured before the OB8? I was told the
OB8 was successor to the Xa. ie the later
model of the 2. That particular album came
out in 1984 so it could be any one of the 2 Obies?

Mike

You're either a Van Halen fan, or you've got some inside info. Do you
know anything about any of the synths used on the first Seal album?

Fairlight2's response is confirmed by a Keyboard magazine
blurb/interview with Eddie Van Halen from that time period. Also FYI,
"Dancing in the Street" is a MiniMoog, and was apparently a piece of
music that was never intended by Eddie to become the 'cover tune' that
we all know.

I would be willing to bet that the first Seal record relies heavily on
the Wavestation, in addition to the Fairlight that Trevor Horn & Co.
have always used extensively.

Anything that Horn, T. could afford.

i.e. everything that had been manufactured up to that point.

Order of release:
OBX, OBSX, OBXA, OB8, OBXPANDER etc.,

IMHO the OBX had the edgiest sound, the OBXA was a little fatter and the OB8 had the smoothest sound I've heard for ages, but not as much
punch, and I love my Xpander for its mod 'patchability', but miss the warmth of the OB8.

There is a synth pad about 4:50 into "Wild", just before the song ends, that I've
been really dying to find the origin of. I can't even guess what it migh be, but
whatever it is, I gotta get one... If you have the album, give it a listen, see if
you don't agree.

As an (proud)Xpander owner myself, I've heard that a lot, that the Xpander is thinner sounding than its siblings. Any of you guys know the
circuit-level reasons for this? Different VCO/VFC/VCA chips? Not being real familiar w/ the OB-series, do they have any onboard effects
processing? When I think Oberheim (and I'm dating myself here...) I think of Jan Hammer with the Powell Probe & a rack of Expander(sic)
modules. Saw him live in Philly around 1980. w/ Al DiMiola & others. Sick show. Unparalelled (sp?) sound.
Agree about the programmability of the Xpander. Closest thing out there to "Reaktor in a box".

Hello Brian. Thanks for the reply. I'm looking for the synth
used for the intro "1984" (the track, song 1 on the cd..) not Jump.
Perhaps they are the same synth however? I'm not certain, could
have been 2 different synthesizers were utilized. Anyone know
for sure or have a source indicating what was used? I'd really like
to found out what synth was doing the fat strings & bass
notes in "1984" -the song *before* Jump, not Jump itself.
It's such a gorgeous sound, so crystalline..
Sorry if I was not clear on previous posts. Thanks to
everyone else for offering their suggestions, I
appreciate it!
Best regards,
Mike

The sound on the intro for "Jump" was the A1 factory preset on the OB-8.

Really?? I played an OB8 in a shop today that was loaded with
the factory presets and A1 was a brass-like sound, not anything
resembling '1984' the intro at all - (the smooth, silky strings and low
'filter-swept' bass notes).. .In fact i remember looking at the patch
shhet from the manual and A1 was listed as "Brass" something.
Thank you for the suggestion anyway, I appreciate the response.
Have a good evening.

The "Jump" sound is a relatively easy synth sound to make...Especially if
you have an analog modeling synth that can emulate different kind of
filters (like the 12db filter on the Obies)

Recipe:

-2 Oscillators, sawtooth, slight detuning between them.

-Organ-style envelope: A=0 D=99 S=99 R=0

-Filter cutoff reasonably high, resonance moderately low

-Portamento between 20-40%

-LFO modulation not needed

Anyone know what synths were used on the 5150 album? Sounds like Eddie
kept using the Obies, though on stuff like "Love Walks In" there's
obvious piano/synth MIDI layering.

Elson
