Does anybody know what that awesome string like sound with the
descending line during the chorus was played on? That, to me is the
ultimate 70's synth "textural" patch. It can also be heard on Styx' "Sail
Away" in the verses.

Thanks, in advance

Probably was an ARP/Solina String Machine with a lot of phase shifter.
Check out early Pink Floyd and others for more of the same.

The liner notes say that and ARP String Ensemble is used for, uh, strings.
Moog Brass and Bass, Rhodes, and other keyboards of the time...

They probably used a Mu-Tron bi-phase on the ARP strings.

I heard it was tracked out with an Oberheim four-voice. I have gotten some
sounds out of mine that make me want to try a remix of that 70's classic. jk

If you've ever had the chance to play with an ARP String Ensemble, you know
that built into it is an awesome sounding 'swirling, chorus, phase like
effect'. They probably didn't need to add much processing to it. Actually,
I don't know if I've ever heard the String Ensemble used on record *without*
the modulation engaged.

Some synth guys even modified their String Ensembles to access the modulation
circuit so they could patch other synths through it!

Nope. I don't believe that the 4-voice was even out when that was recorded.
From what I recall in an old KEYBOARD interview, the entire album was done
with MiniMoog, ARP String Ensemble and Fender Rhodes.

Well, much to my embarassment, I actually have the album, and
I'm looking at the liner notes right now.

There are actually two other keyboard players on the album
besides Wright (not counting a bass-synth track by Steve
Pocaro on one song). Here's what the liner lists, make
of it what you will:

Peter Reilich -- Piano, Fender Rhodes, claivent, organ,
Oberheim and Moog Synthesizers

David Foster -- Piano, clavinet, organ, Oberheim and Arp
Synthesizers

Gary Wright -- Fender Rhodes, clavinet, Oberheim solos and
effects, Moog bass, solos, and effects, and Arp Synthesizer

Also, there were some real strings on the album.

it actually says what he was using in the top 20 list edition of keyboard
magazine. I can't remember what it was and I don't have the issue here.
but I remmeber reading about it.

actually, he used an arp string ensemble for the string sounds, a rhodes
(played by David Foster), a mini-moog for the bass, and good old real
drums.

I thought Gary Wright (and David Foster, who played on the album) was
using a Moog for the bass sound and an ARP String Ensemble for the
strings. Don't know what was used for that spacey chirping sound,
though.

Anyone verify these?

Cheers :')
