I have been having problems with my ESQ1 since an
upgrade to ROM V3.5.

Occasionally I get the following message
"SOFT RESET - SYSTEM ERROR 03
PRESS ANY BUTTON TO CONTINUE"
I have also had system error 01.
There is nothing regarding errors in the
user or technical documentation and my local music
stores havent a clue.

The error often occurs during a glissando, and sometimes
on power up.
What does the error mean?
Any fixing suggestions? (apart from "buy a decent synth")

YA!

I don't know why you'd be getting these errors on power-up, but you may
want to do a hard system initialization on your unit. I don't have the
manual handy, but it tells you how to do it in there. I think you hold
down the "record" button while powering up, or else press both the
top-left menu key and the "record" key simultaneously, I forget. This
will erase and re-initialize all of the nonvolatile memory of the unit,
so be sure and save all your patches and sequences before doing it.

As for the glissandos, this is standard operating procedure for the ESQ.
If you play (in the words of the Emperor) too many notes, it will come
up with that error. (Gee, I wonder if a buffer is overflowing.)

I've had this problem on glissandos, on Jerry-Lee-Lewis-style hammered
chords, and over MIDI. Just play slower, I guess. It seems unfortunate
to me that a musical instrument arbitrarily puts limits on the abilities
of the human player. Welcome to the world of Ensoniq.

I'll second that. I just recently got a software upgrade on my Peavey
DPM V2 and they told me to make sure I saved all my data and then do
a hard system reset. I guess this is so the machine will know about the
new eproms that are in it or something like that.

Good luck,

Russ

I have had similar problems with my SQ80--sometimes I think they are
heat related. But I'm not sure whether the problems appear when it
is cold or go away when it is cold! In any case it's very frustrating
because the SQ80 seems to send out a barage of MIDI data whenever this
happens.
