Hello,

I'm trying to find out if its possible (or desireable) to have a SCSI and a
non-SCSI hard drive working together in the same system (under W95). I
currently have a UDMA (EIDE) hard drive and am looking to buy a SCSI card for a
CD drive. I know I need to get a second hard drive someday, and I always
thought I would go with SCSI, for the audio, and use my current UDMA drive for
system files. Whether or not I can use a SCSI hard drive in my current system,
will determine how powerful a SCSI card I get.
In the last few days, I've been told not to do this, and that I can do this
with no problem so many times I'm at a loss. IS anyone doing this?? Has
anybody tried and found out that it wasn't possible?? I don't know why I've
seen so many conflicting views on this - it seems pretty clear cut to me,
either it is or is not possible.

Thanks in advance,
Carlos

I'm using an EIDE HD & a SyQuest SparQ (also EIDE) plus a SCSI HD, a SCSI CD-ROM
drive, & a SCSI Zip under Win95 without any problem whatsoever.

Maybe some thoughts from a computer guy. Sure it's possible. We do it
fairly often in file servers (but it works in Win 95 or 98 as well.) We put
the operating system on an IDE drive and SCSI drive(s) become the network
server volume. In your computer the SCSI could become the D drive. This
type of arrangement works with the fewest complications when the IDE drive
is the boot drive and the SCSI drive is not but it can be done the other way
as well. My vote for an excellent all around modern day SCSI card is the
Adaptec 2940UW. High performance, compatible with and supported by most
hardware and software, not unreasonably expensive. Good luck.

I have a Fujitsu 4.3 Gig UDMA hard drive and a 9 Gig SCSI Seagate Cheeta hard drive
with a Hewlett Packard 6020i SCSI CD burner all operating with no problems in WIN
95. They have been enjoying each other's company now for about 8 months. I use
Cakewalk 7.0 Pro Audio and have a Turtle Beach Pinnacle card w/digital I/O and MIDI
port to an SC-88 module. No problems with any of this. I have been recording
MIDI/Audio hybrid music on this system for over a year now. I only recently(8
months ago) installed the SCSI hard drive.

I've had to do this several times and its not a problem at all. The
important thing is the SCSI adapter. DO NOT save money here. Go with the
Adaptec 2940UW. It works great under WIN 95 and doesn't mind having an IDE
drive as a brother (or sister). It's become somewhat of an industry standard
for SCSI, so all drive manufacturers make sure their drives work with this
card.

If you have a desktop or mini-tower configuration, watch out for heat
buildup. An additional drive and SCSI card might raise the temperature in
your case by quite a bit.
