I bought an alesis sr16 drum machine quite a while back intending to use the
drum machine to make industrial/techno type music. But the sounds on the
drum machine are pretty much too realistic! (And you can't edit the sounds
at all.... what a pity)

Anyway, I was wondering if there was any way I could add new sounds to the
drum machine without spending tons of money. Can you get midi sound "boxes"
that simply play sounds by a midi trigger (like a drum machine)?

Yeah, well I'm afraid I made the same mistake. I have long since sold my
SR-16 and I got an old Roland TR-909. (Very Industrial/Techno sounding)
The SR-16 is pittiful. If you can't sell it (you can just try hard) then
get an R-8 or R-8m and get the Dance card. It has 909 samples and you can
edit everything. The SR-16 will go into the dustbin of drum machines. The
sounds even though the are realistic still sound weak. Get an R-8 you'll
be much happier.

Hey, I liked the SR-16, once you EQ the sh*t out of it...

I think what this guy really wants is a sampler. (Add new sounds?)
Here's my scheme. Use a rack-mount as your wave source (Ensoniq SQ-R in
my case), and a sampler for (obviously) drum samples and soundbites.
(Ensoniq EPS... the 16+ TR-808* instrument is one of my faves so far,
along with some samples of the Personal Jesus single CD). A good used
EPS can be had loaded for under $1K... I have no experience with Akai gear.

Don't get a Yamaha TX16W unless you're very brave... the sound is nice,
but the system sucks VERY badly. I still can't get stuff of mine to
work right.

P.S. Anyone want to listen to stuff I've done?

.....If you are into Industrial/Dance and want the drums that take your
breath away.....I woul recommend sampling your sr 16 souns and then
editing them throught the sampler. I use a DR550, Dr660, D4, R8 and a
TR-808. All of these kits I have sampled and modified by tweeking them
to the max......then I trigger them through mI AKAI S1100. Also another
effect that give Drums that nice Dance/Industrial feel is effect
Processors, the Alesis quadra-verb is a great processor to dedicate to
the drum kits. Well E-Mail me if you would like to know more about some
things I do to tweek out some heavy hit'n.
